States gov spends over half their income from taxes on their military. That equals tons of corporations and people getting rich real easy. There's no way they will ever not have a "huge/main enemy" to build against because they will always create one, how else can you justify spending pretty much more than the rest of the world combined on military? If it's not Russia it will be China, then Iran or (insert any non-NATO country here).

U.S. to Host World Press Freedom Day in 2011
Press Statement
Philip J. Crowley
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Public AffairsWashington, DC
December 7, 2010
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The United States is pleased to announce that it will host UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day event in 2011, from May 1 - May 3 in Washington, D.C. UNESCO is the only UN agency with the mandate to promote freedom of expression and its corollary, freedom of the press.
The theme for next year’s commemoration will be 21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers. The United States places technology and innovation at the forefront of its diplomatic and development efforts. New media has empowered citizens around the world to report on their circumstances, express opinions on world events, and exchange information in environments sometimes hostile to such exercises of individuals’ right to freedom of expression. At the same time, we are concerned about the determination of some governments to censor and silence individuals, and to restrict the free flow of information. We mark events such as World Press Freedom Day in the context of our enduring commitment to support and expand press freedom and the free flow of information in this digital age.
Highlighting the many events surrounding the celebration will be the awarding of the UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize at the National Press Club on May 3rd. This prize, determined by an independent jury of international journalists, honors a person, organization or institution that has notably contributed to the defense and/or promotion of press freedom, especially where risks have been undertaken.
The Newseum will host the first two days of events, which will engage a broad array of media professionals, students, and citizen reporters on themes that address the status of new media and internet freedom, and challenges and opportunities faced by media in our rapidly changing world.
The State Department looks forward to working with UNESCO and the U.S. executive committee spearheaded by the Center for International Media Assistance at the National Endowment for Democracy, IREX, and the United Nations Foundation and the many civil society organizations they have brought together in support of the organization of events unfolding in Washington.

I mean we all know the Americans are hypocrites at the best of times, but for them to release something like this ON A DAY LIKE TODAY!!! Classic American buffoonery.

it's scary to me how little the everyday person seems to know about this scandal... I'm like "yo the wikileaks thing is so interesting", and the typical response seems to be "is that like wikipedia? why what's wrong with it"

Wow, how ironic!!! We need to have Noam Chomsky present to comment on this. When it comes to freedom of press, America is very piss pathetic. = "Manufacturing Consent"

LOL, the irony of all ironies.
Just looked up some sweet quotes:
George orwell
All political thinking for years past has been vitiated in the same way. People can foresee the future only when it coincides with their own wishes, and the most grossly obvious facts can be ignored when they are unwelcome.
or
H.G wells
If we don't end war, war will end us.
There's a better one that fits the wiki leak issue but also war in genenral (describing that if there is no enemy that a gov will end up creating one) but I can't find it. |

I cannot stand this kind of apathy. The response from these people might be that they are just interested in thier own lives, and can't be arsed with these 'distractions'. However, it is completely illogical; if you truly want to put your own interests above those of others, you have to be aware of what is going on around you. If you want to live a more selfish existence, this does not preclude the need to engage with others. As soon as you forfeit your right try to influence your environment, you are empowering others to have nore control over your life.
The actions of world governments are also counter-inutitive. The more they persecute Assange and Wikileaks, the more support they will garner from ordinary citizens - the Facebook site has added nearly 500,000 'likes' in the last few days. Hopefully, the number of people who are becoming motivated to act and protest is rising exponentially. I, for one, never conisdered donating money last week, but will do now. I will also discover how it feels to fund a terrorist organisation...Muhahaha! :haha: |

although i agree with you i disagree in a sense that some people just don't care about politics and everything related to world conflicts. I know people that don't even read the news, at all, unless someone dies like michael jackson. |

I've been saying this for a while now but it is in scary how most people seem live in a god damn bubble these days. They have become very ignorant. They are so caught up in their boring lives and anything outside of that is not considered important. I don’t want bring the past into this but let’s not forget the G20 events this past summer. And how most people just ignored to see the big picture and blindly defended the Government’s actions. |
