I wonder if this will be headline news tomorrow. I have yet to see The National Post or The Globe and Mail covering this.

wow.

He said WikiLeaks had "dozens" of people who were helping the organisation deal with the cyber-attack and set up the mirror websites "but it takes a lot of time for us to manage the process".

"We are automating that process and will soon have hundreds. If there is a battle between the US military and the preservation of History, we have insured History will win."

OK! I understand releasing info on backhanded trash talking between diplomats and other 'dirt' that just adds towards the already negative global view of the US and its policies..

but....

I think this is going too far... why list this stuff? I mean I'm sure several countries like Russia already know where vital US facilities are, but to put this in the open is really really dangerous.

But I guess once they you try to rip the head off the snake, its just going to release its venom everywhere before it dies...

The house of cards is falling apart.

The US is now fighting its third war. A nation vs several people with a website.

SCARY

We're ed. Bring on 2012.
The Potter
Add to that list the revelation that the UK government have been lying to the British electorate in at least two blatant ways:

- they colluded with the Americans to limit the supposedly 'independent and thorough' investigation into the lead up to the Iraq war - the very war that they conspired to start in the first place!

- also, they lied to the UK citizens and the rest of the international community when, having signed the convention on the use, stockpiling and transferring of cluster bombs, they then secretly gave the Americans the green light to continue storing them on the British island of Diego Garcia.

Wikileaks definitely ed up over the release of those key sites. However, whilst condemning this individual act, we should not lose sight of the bigger picture, and the just cause that they are promoting. This cock-up actually serves well to demonstrate how transparency can go too far, and so assists in defining the boundaries of the public discussion, and arriving at a better consensus.

Morally, I think Wikileaks will be still be vindicated in the long-run, as long as they learn not to make these kind of reckless disclosures again. As we are learning (and know from countless incidents in history), asymetric information is allowing governments, banks and corporations to behave criminally on many occasions, so Wikileaks should be forgiven for making one reckless move. It would be illogical to react by not continuing to try and wrest back more of the right types of information and control.

This incident does nothing to counter the argument that citizens need more of certain kinds of information, be that from governments or corporations, as the status quo is clearly sub-optimal, if, under false premises, illegal wars can be conduted, billions/trillions of our tax dollars can be spent, hundreds of thousands can die, and millions can get displaced. Furthermore, there is clearly room for less asymetric information in sectors like banking, since better information makes the customer more informed and allows markets to run in a more efficent manner, thus encouraging a purer form of market capitalism. If better competition (predicated on the quality of market information, amongst other things) and Adam Smith's 'invisible hand' had been able to effectively operate in the banking sector, the financial crisis may never have happened, as greater transparency would have revealed all those complicated and toxic assets on balance sheets. If no bank had also been too big to fail, a natural selection of the healthiest and fittest companies would have existed, as is the case in other, less opaque and better-functioning sectors of our economies, where dogs can eat dogs!

lol. really? which of these things we didn't already know.

the only thing i didn't have true knowledge of was the Yemen thing. never heard of that. but why wouldn't they allow US millitary strikes? Karzai is known to be very corrupt and out of his element running such a state. obviously russia is ran by russian mafia. china are playing chess with the koreans against each other to keep both countries down. as well as other chinese "games" in the tech world.

you're right, some people may have a basic notion that these things are possibly happening, it's not necessarily "new" information... but seeing it confirmed and communicated in a tone of "notable concern" makes it scarier, at least to me lol

i dunno. i wouldn't be too scared. it's much scarier that you wouldn't know these things.

the latest release is a list of international infrastructures that could be important to the US and it's economy. basically, target sites that terrorists could hit outside of US to harm them. many of the targets are in Canada. as least you know that Americans are thinking about these things. that is not scary to me.
