How does computer hacking play into this? I'm confused.

Ok, those sites (mastercard/visa) disabled the ability for people to donate to wikileaks.

In retaliation hackers disabled the sites as a way of protest/'hacktivation' to show their support for wikileaks...

Then you get the opposite, people who support wikileaks are getting hacked by those who feel the opposite...(and consequently side with the governments of the world...)

Sweet article.

My fav part is:

"In addition, in November Mr Assange contacted US Ambassador in London Louis Susman asking for help redacting information that could put individuals at risk. When the US government refused, Mr Assange wrote he therefore concluded the risk of harm was "fanciful" while stating he had no interest in hurting US national security."

Yeah, such a clever move. Wikileaks must have spent years figuring out how this chess game might play out.

They covered their bases pretty well I'd say. I mean if you have proof you asked the government BEFORE if those documents are alright and aren't a big deal if released and they say 'yeah sure it's no problem', what can they do? Retract their statements? Psht.

I just find it weird tho, why would someone be SO passionate about Wikileaks that they'd go and hack Visa lol

It sounds sketch to me, could the Gov't be painting all wikileaks supporters as deviant/criminals?

It's not that weird Jon, a lot of people think this is a huge huge huge free speech issue and deserves to be fought over.

As for the Gov't painting all wikileaks supporters as deviants, I'm sure they're doing that...(but will say they aren't)

Due to the huge amount of propoganda that is out there, it so easy to forget that Assange/Wikileaks are still innocent, and certainly have not been charged by the US. This renders actions by the likes of Paypal, Visa and Mastercard all the more ridiculous.

Look at Paypal's boss pathetically failing in his attempt to cover his ass (and rightly getting jeered by European journalists), as he tells a blatant lie about having been contacted by the State Department. The only person who appears to have intimidated them into the suspension was Joe Lieberman. Since when did the US consituition change so that a lone Senator can determine guilt/innocence, and not a court of law?

because VISA has stopped the ability of people to use their credit cards to donate to wikileaks. also they have taken the donations that were not posted yet and taken them away.

the hackers want to show mastercard and visa and paypal that it is not their decision where our money goes. therefore hack them!

What's up with reading comprehension nowadays?
People would rather watch 25 minute clip versus spending 5 minutes on reading same article.
Brain dead anyone?

Steady on, I was one of those lazy sods, lol! I listened to it in the background, whilst reading another Wikileaks article - you have to multi-task when trying to keep up with this ever-evolving drama :D

i think what we're seeing with wikileaks is the biggest scandal of my lifetime to date, and things are just getting started.

i'd happily contribute to ing over the powers that be in order for the truth to come to light, and especially because of how badly the powers that be would like to not see the truth come to light, but that's just me.
