How often do you go out to clubs to hear music? (pg. 4)

you are right, at some point i decided that my new tracks shouldn't feature a breakdown as we understand it in trance and that 5 minutes including dj friendly intro and outro is enough for a track, some locals are playing my tracks since i decided this, a 10 minute track is for purists, ask your female friends specially about their opinion about a 4minute+ track they wouldn't like it or they would fast forward because it is not attractive for them.

Actually you can learn a lot from edm noobs, you are making music for them if you want to make club music.

Judge Jules has been snipping his tracks down for a few years now, it gets more tracks in your set

I worked as a bar-tender in one club and the club owner, who was a raving alcoholic from Iran, was auditioning DJ's. Of course, it's the perfect night for him to go clubbing so I wind up, the sole bartender, alone with this idiot in the booth and one bouncer, working the door. The guy started off with a Debbie Gibson track and I looked at my tip jar and winced a little. He continues on, gets a small crowd, with more girls than guys, and they're dancing on the dance floor and some are looking at the bar and digging into their purses. Crowds attract crowds, and people are trickling in with the bouncer checking ID's for the occasional line - and it's like that for all of twenty minutes with him playing a lot of polished remixes of some Top 40 stuff, in addition to the typical 1992-93 dance anthems.

Then the decided to drop the same Debbie Gibson song. Everyone leaves. No one comes in for the rest of the night. No one. And when he was done, what did he do? Threw that mothering Debbie Gibson song on, one last time. I was outside, talking to the bouncer, when the owner returned. He asked me what I thought of the guy. I just pointed inside where Debbie Gibson would belt it out to an empty room, one final time at 110Db SPL.


dropping a big vocal track multiple times in an evening is a pretty old trick that many ny house djs from back in the day would do. The thing with doing something like this though is that if it isn't timed right it will fail hard...that or debbie gibson:p

David Morales must have dropped the same madonna track at least 7 times in different ways over a night once. The gays in the place ate that right up.

It was quite the tragedy. He did alright mixing in other tunes but, for some reason, felt compelled to transition in a way which highlighted that it was Debbie Gibson. No sneaking it in as some attempt at a humorous musical riddle. No putting it in some cleverly developed context, that might have made it ironic or even poignant. He's just grooving along and all of the sudden decided he'd match her up for quick EQ work and an all-too-fast fader slide into Gibson and by extension, professional obscurity, which just obliterated the energy he'd developed. Even the outro seemed meant to ensure Gibson's significance, letting the music bed fall out of its rhythm section, before stepping on the remaining elements with the next selection.

yo i honestly go and see every dj that comes to calgary. Aside from Myon and Shane 54 last week(got to fcuked up to make it there)i have seen Tiesto, aly and fila, richard durand, ronski speed, A&B, armin, spencer & hill, deadmau5, kalvin harris, skrillex, tydi, andy moor, kaskade, gareth emery, ashley wallbridge, basshunter, dash berlin, filo & peri in the past year alone to name a few haha. I love going out to see them spin cuz trance is all about the energy of the music to me

I play out every weekend, but that doesn't count. To actually go out to a club to hear good music is probably several times a year. I used to go out 2-3 times a week a few years back. This year so far, I've gone to see John Digweed back on NYE, and Sven Vath last week. My next outing is in June for PVD & July for Sasha. I may go out this weekend to network at a party I know lots of industry people are going to be at.

This thread seems to be very DJ-centric, so a follow-up question: how often do you guys go out to clubs to hear live music? What about you guys who voted "never" - do you get out to see live bands/musicians, including live EDM acts? Do you guys have a preference?

That's a good question. While I have my preference for club music, I know a lot of live musicians who I'd hear as regularly as they play. That said, it's been far too long since I've been out to see a live band. The last one was a reggae dub duo, one of whom ran a sequencer with everything but the guitar and vocals sequenced.

Now, that's much better. I go out to concerts more than I go to clubs. I go quite often to those. My fiance loves Mexican indie electronica bands and we both love spanish rock, so we go to those concerts quite often. As a matter of fact, I've been dying to see NORTEC COLLECTIVE. They're a mexican indie-electronica band from Tijuana.

Not what I think of when i think of latin edm.
