It completely defeats the point - you lose the closed system reliability of a mac as well as losing the broad base options of a PC.

You buy a mac because you don't want to around with win updates, endless component variables (which can affect stability), viruses etc.

You buy a PC as it costs less, has an endless choice of components and is more tailorable.

A hackintosh, does away with the stablilty of a mac, and becuase only certain components work on it, you lose the options that a PC affords.

Also, you'll find that most hackintoshes are just home made macs - you've still using the same equipment (albeit a tiny bit cheaper) but get no support and all apple have to do is release a firmware or OSX update and you're ed again. They also take a lot of work (more so than a normal PC) to get in to shape, which is exactly defeats the point of a mac. All this for a saving of maybe $2-300.

You want a PC, do that. You want a mac, do that. You want both? Buy both. Don't bother with hackintoshes. Simply not worth the time, unless of course you're just an enthusiast and want to do it just because.

And frankly random faults with your logic board on a mac pro is incredibly rare - they either die or work, not do weird like you're describing.

Something else is wrong.

Follow the instructions here:

http://www.macusersguide.com/2009/0...the-logicboard/

I kind of get the feeling this is like getting a flat tire and deciding to build a new car.

You can go PC, but I swear, having got a recent asus laptop (best of it's class by a long way) I still loath windows for so many dumb reasons; Background tasks (Every ing program you install runs one even though it's not in use), updates (I swear, I've had this laptop 3 months now and it's needed windows updates 27 separate times now with no noticeable improvement in performance or stability), customization (I had to spend a full day stripping back windows and changing options just to get it in to non-bull mode)....I could go on, but me, even if you know a lot about computers as we do, I use them for work or music, not to reassure myself that I can defeat the backwards organisation of microsoft's products.

Oh and people, please stop suggesting Hackintosh's for anything other than proving to yourself you can make one. I've said it before but it's like getting a hot girlfriend and then chopping your dick off.

yup. Tried everything. The only thing i haven't tried is swapping cpus which i will try tonight. When it runs , i checked the sensors and there is no heat issues. There is also no ing log as to why it shuts down. Even booting from cd will be subject to shut downs. Some times the shut downs happen 4 seconds after boot with no beeps of leds.

Built this about 3 years ago for around 700$. I don't see why people still try to produce on laptops or use macbook pros to produce, but the right PC built the right way and set up correctly can work wonders. Don't get me wrong, I have a macbook pro and love it for running traktor 2, but a properly built PC is solid like a rock, and I hit maybe 30% on my most CPU intensive projects (ie. 30+ synth, 50+ fx)

Windows 7 64 bit Professional
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i% CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz 2.93GHz (quadcore)
RAM: 4.00 GB
System type: 64-Bit Operating System
Audio Interface: Audio Kontrol 1
Video: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series (running dual screen setup at 1920x1080)
Disk Drive: ST3500418AS ATA Device
Motherboard: ACPI x64- based PC
Case: Thermaltake Case (14 USBs, 2 USB 3.0, and all sorts of other connectors, 5 silent fans)

Now, there are probably much better parts you can get, since this is 3 years old and I haven't done anything to upgrade it, but I listed this just because they all work. You could probably build this for under 400$ today

Pay attention to Motherboard, for me has to have Texas Instrumant FireWire chipset for good connectivity for any firewire hardware you want to add/connect to your computer. This system is brilliant for production.

Cheers

So far rock solid ""

Hey Mad4Brad, I recently switched back to PC as well. One thing I would recommend right off the bat is to be very, very careful when buying wireless adapters. I bought two different pci wireless cards (listed at the bottom) and both caused such bad latency issues that I had to return them. Luckily I was able to move my computer, and now it is hooked up through Ethernet.

I'm not sure if you know about it, but the website you want to use is www.newegg.com . On there you can see people review parts, and sometimes people will post their configurations in the comments of parts - and in the process state how stable it is. They also have some forums if you're interested.

Below is listed my configuration which is working really well for me. beats the hell out of producing on a macbook pro (which I was doing previously) and is cheaper.

EDIT: with that said, I'd probably recommend getting a different motherboard. Mine was kind of a pain to get started since my memory was not technically supported by the motherboard. I had to manually set the times of the memory. It really isn't a big deal, but if you get frustrated easily I wouldn't bother. Maybe look into the Asus Sabertooth motherboard (since it is built for stability and has a great warranty) and find on the manufacturer's website a list of compatible memory - choose one of those. Then again, now my computer works perfectly, so I can't complain.

CPU (in case you are curious this thing is way more than enough. I have never pushed it past 50% usage. Don't buy an AMD if you can afford too. Intel is faster. I'm not an expert, so i won't offer an explanation. you can definitely look it up online though): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16819115070

Motherboard (not sure why other person recommended against ASUS, my current board is working perfectly fine): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813131701

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820145347

Graphics (since I do play some games on my PC): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16814130664

OS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16832116992

HD (I don't trust SSD quite yet): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16822148697

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817139010

Heatsink (not necessary): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16835103065

Case (if you are interested): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16811139006

Avoid like the plaig this wireless card. The drivers don't work properly on Windows 7 64bit and cause latency issues. I am not the only one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16833124342

The problem I have with Newegg is that their motherboards are so gamer oriented. I don't need ing 7.1 surround built-in when I'm going to be installing a PCI board for sound.

Yes, that is true. I'm a gamer, so I like that about newegg. However, models like ASUS Sabertooth aren't really gamer oriented. So, while the majority of the motherboards are for gamers, there certainly are some that are not.

So i've been thinking of going back to Windows. IS there a site anywhere with builds that are stable ? Like people that list their components and whether it is working or not ?

I've also thought about buying a used mac pro for 1500 ish. The actual logic board is 1000 which is ridiculous. So ya. I have a feeling it is the smc chip that is acting up. Did all the resetting, tested it barebones , with working ram. The thing is that it is never the same. Sometimes it will turn off right away, sometimes in 1 hour. I have a power conditioner. The power is good. So ya, logic board is relaly my only guess.

Any help would be appreciated.

Btw, I thought I would mention that the reason I stopped using my macbook pro - this was like two months ago - is because it was having really weird issues too. It would keep stating that it was "out of memory" and would freeze for five minutes before I could do anything else. Considering all I would have open is an internet browser and logic with one channel I knew my laptop was messed up. I have 4GB of memory, and on my new PC I have never been able to use more than 4GB even with super massive projects.

Yeah. That's Newegg's Schtick and there's no begrudging that. And I like their interface, too.

But the thing about buying gamer PC stuff is that as long as you can get past it being a gamer PC, all you'll experience is more than enough processing power
