Next you're going to be telling me about how great Lamborghinis are and how I really just need to sit in a Lamborghini Gallardo to understand why they're so great.

Mercedes are ugly, tacky cars for the nouveau riche. Talk about how much nice things are worth all you want, I'll never disagree on that, but when you start calling Mercedes "beautiful" and making fun of Rusty for driving a perfectly workable car, I'll call you out for what you are.

No. Lamborghini's are tacky. Always have been always will be. Don't get excited just because Big Worm called you shortsighted (and he's right for the reasons I stated above about how looking down at people for what they drive is just as bad as judging people who want a quality car and aren't afraid to pay for it etc).

Mercedes are ugly,

That's your personal taste - millions of people disagree, including nearly every car critic on the planet but you're entitled to your taste whatever that's worth...

....and this is where you're plainly deluded; I don't think anyone can claim that Merc are tacky or for the nouveau riche. They don't "scream". It's why their engines are famously quiet. It's the car of choice for diplomats the world over. Their styling is subtle and understated compared to the other luxury marques. They play on refined Elegance and that's more for the Riche, not the nouveau.

I'm sorry Lews but you actually couldn't be more off base. Sure a few twats buy them and bling them out but that happens with every expensive brand and you cannot accuse Merc of designing them like that in the slightest. AMG actually have quite stict rules about what you can and can't do to affect the styling and if you want more you have to take it a 3rd party.

Merc do make some incredible looking cars. It's not a global conspiracy that that millions agree with me (again including most car journo's) but you're confusing points:

His car is perfectly workable - I never said it wasn't - but he can't tell me I've got taste because I find certain Merc models when he drives a car that ing ugly.

Actually, he completely can, for two reasons. 1: Just because someone drives an ugly car, doesn't mean they don't have good taste. What you own and your ability to appreciate are two completely separate realms, as what you own is much more dependent on financial resources. 2: Mercedes suck.

"Riche" don't buy Mercedes. People who have never had money before their generation and have no respect for beauty buy Merecedes, as it's one of the most prominent car brands in the world, and one of the most easily recognizable. It screams "I'm rich, but I have good taste" and it fails utterly on the latter. That has nothing to do with people blinging them out. It has to do with the fact that Merecedes is the Louis Vuitton of the road.

Mercedes are nice cars. No need to hate...

Sorry Lwes, wrong again: when they post a picture up and the caption is "like a boss", I beg to differ. It's clearly an indication of bad taste as that car is somewhat ugly and you've even agreed.

Therefore it's a little rich (Riche?) to slag off a luxury marque when you drive a decade old grey subaru.

Money has nothing to do with it; my second car was a (Austin) mini cooper that cost me 800 quid. I got more appreciation for that car than any other car I've ever owned. people would literally stop me in the street to tell me how ing good looking that car was. Money is not the factor here. Taste is. you can buy a 60's mustang or a Challenger in really nice condition for the same money he paid for the subaru. I could go on and on, but you get the point.

Again, that's you're own very niche personal taste and take on it, which I believe is misguided. I personally would say exactly the same sentence about BMW.

You do understand that Merc have one of the longest heritages? Nouveau buy BWM or Bently, not merc because they are too understated compared to the other brands for those that want to be "seen".

Dude, is your memory completely terrible or are you just really awful at selectively editing? The FULL caption was "Like a boss :p". It's pretty ing clear Stephen doesn't think he's a boss for driving that car, it's also clear that he'd prefer to spend his money on other things, such as, I don't know, a wedding.

I can't comment entirely on that as I'm not familiar with the prices on those cars, but I can sure as tell you that neither of those would be as practical for his purposes.

I'm well acquainted with the histories of the German manufacturers.

Saying that Mercedes are not flashy is hilarious. The grill and logo emblem on those things are completely ridiculous and way more flashy than BMWs.

Growing up, the father of my best mate owned a BMW dealership. It was attached to their house and had a full BMW certified garage there. His clients were 90% tacky, nouveau and tasteless and they lapped up BMW as much as they could. By the time I was 18, I had driven every BMW made even the hideous 8 series. I was one of the first people in the UK to drive the Z4 as he was loaned one of the three inspection vehicles brought to the UK. I remember thinking this has to be the tackiest thing I have or ever will sit in.

I was right.

I think I do know what I'm talking about.

Neither. He posted up a pic because he's proud of it (which is fine - it's not a bad car as such) but let's not get off point: it's a little ing rich to slag off cars such a Merc (which by the way, I have no stock in etc) when you drive a car infinitely more ugly.

Well I can - I've owned several vintage cars and worked on them, and that should tell you I know a little more than just having a passing interest in cars.

This isn't a discussion on practicality. I do not deny for a second that the Subaru is practical, probably way more so than a merc in his situation.

But it's about design and again one of the criteria of the OP was a car that would look the part and he's got the money to afford a luxury vehicle. he shouldn't have people giving him for that - it's perfectly fine to want nice, good looking and well engineered things.

Then you should know that the large emblem is actually part of their history; it's actually smaller now than in the "golden Age" of mercedes. Just google gullwing or 1956 roadster to see what I mean. it's not a co-incidence that they resurrected the emblem when they announced they new gullwing and roadster. When you put it in to perspective you realize that Mercedes is playing on their heritage not appealing to flash.

And anyway, have you looked at emblem design in the last decade? VW, Peugeot, Lexus, Renault, Suzuki, Honda, Jaguar, (too many to list) have all made their emblems massive. At least Merc did it in the 50's to differentiate their top tier cars.

BMW's havne't changed their emblems, but the styling is hideuos and it;s widely accpeted they have always missed the mark when it comes to interior styling:

And get this, BMW THEMSELVES release "performance stripes" each year.

Now tell me, do Merc do things like that ;)
Silky Johnson

Joss Weatherby
I have the easy answer. Both are . I have never liked BMW or Mec. Nazi-mobiles.

It's funny that DJRANN gets so worked up over a purposely and obviously sarcastic post. I could afford a BMW. I could afford a Mercedes. I don't drive one because I don't need them. I don't need an emblem on my car to "define" who I am. The people who think what you drive has all to do with anything are twats like DJRANN whom I've never wanted anything to do with. Truth is, I bought that car fresh out of college, it was my first car, and it handles very well in snow (which is about 6 months of the year here). I also work from home 99% of the time, so I drive maybe 20 miles per week. I've driven both Mercs and BMWs, the latter being a much greater pleasure. So it isn't "riche" that I comment on something I actually do have experience with, besides the fact that I see both every day. I also find it intriguing that he seems to have a backstory to give him experience or expertise on seemingly any topic you can think of. Meetings with an orthopedic surgeon make him an expert on the anatomy of a knee and its relations to running on hard surfaces, living by a BMW shop makes him an authority on how poorly made and tacky (that was a good one btw) they are. Numerous connections in the movie and music industries. Either he's the guy from the Dos Equis commercials, or he's as fake as L4C.

Oh DJRANN, you are something.
