My Aunt is one of those Queen Anne luxury car drivers... So many blown red lights... :wtf:

This thread has turned into a retarded car "genre war". Perfect, for a music forum :stongue: you guys.

I like some models of Audi, Merc, and BMW.

Some look , and should be ridiculed; some look great and should be lauded.

Each of them make some good looking, well engineered cars SOMEWHERE in their line-up.

Growing up, the father of my best mate owned a BMW dealership. It was attached to their house and had a full BMW certified garage there. His clients were 90% tacky, nouveau and tasteless and they lapped up BMW as much as they could. By the time I was 18, I had driven every BMW made even the hideous 8 series. I was one of the first people in the UK to drive the Z4 as he was loaned one of the three inspection vehicles brought to the UK. I remember thinking this has to be the tackiest thing I have or ever will sit in.

I was right.

I think I do know what I'm talking about.

Neither. He posted up a pic because he's proud of it (which is fine - it's not a bad car as such) but let's not get off point: it's a little ing rich to slag off cars such a Merc (which by the way, I have no stock in etc) when you drive a car infinitely more ugly.

Well I can - I've owned several vintage cars and worked on them, and that should tell you I know a little more than just having a passing interest in cars.

This isn't a discussion on practicality. I do not deny for a second that the Subaru is practical, probably way more so than a merc in his situation.

But it's about design and again one of the criteria of the OP was a car that would look the part and he's got the money to afford a luxury vehicle. he shouldn't have people giving him for that - it's perfectly fine to want nice, good looking and well engineered things.

Then you should know that the large emblem is actually part of their history; it's actually smaller now than in the "golden Age" of mercedes. Just google gullwing or 1956 roadster to see what I mean. it's not a co-incidence that they resurrected the emblem when they announced they new gullwing and roadster. When you put it in to perspective you realize that Mercedes is playing on their heritage not appealing to flash.

And anyway, have you looked at emblem design in the last decade? VW, Peugeot, Lexus, Renault, Suzuki, Honda, Jaguar, (too many to list) have all made their emblems massive. At least Merc did it in the 50's to differentiate their top tier cars.

BMW's havne't changed their emblems, but the styling is hideuos and it;s widely accpeted they have always missed the mark when it comes to interior styling:

And get this, BMW THEMSELVES release "performance stripes" each year.

Now tell me, do Merc do things like that ;)

If you filter out all the self gratifying digital wanking in this post, i can agree on some points here. most BMW's are tacky pieces of ..... 3 series, z series ect... but the 8 series? really? any petrol head worth his mettle would kill his own grandmother to own a 12 pack 850.

Our COO bought the new Cayman R a couple years ago as his new piece of flash to park out front of my office..... one of our division managers has an 850 CSi and it still gets a bigger crowd of gawkers in the parking lot, and having been for a spin in both, the 850 is sill an orgasm on 4 wheels....

I think it was Jack who commented a while ago about how the whole COR has turned into yuppie-ville or something like that.

Old (diesel) Mercs, most of them can be found in Albania if you watched Top Gear, still drive because they simply won't die.
Old Beamers still drive because their owners love them, also from technical point of view. My former colleague first had a 520 (next to an Alfa 156), then bought an 728, both old-timers and since a few years has a now 9 year old 760i (V12 :)) ,to pull his caravan on vacation :).
Maintaining them is not easy if you don't want to spend a fortune as some parts are pretty complicated.
My dad drives 3 series since I was like 10 years old, so almost 30 years now.
Last Sunday my eye caught an old 635 CSi parked in our street, still a looker.
I drive a Toyota RAV4 and my wife a Honda Accord (Acura TSX in the US).

Edit: haven't read a lot about the technical side of the named brands, no engineers here (or technical interested)?

The Acura is an Accord in NL? We have Accords in the US you know...

Acura is not sold in Europe, the US Honda Accord looks different.
Actually Acura is the brand, my Honda Accord looks like an Acura TSX.

Yea in Europe the Accord is the TSX. The North American Accord has no European equivalent as far as I know.

I respect your opinion, but I don't understand why you've chosen to disclose so much personal information on this forum (who you work for, etc) when it's not necessary. No one on this forum knows me personally, and I enjoy keeping it that way.

I came, I saw...I trolled. I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing some yahoo on this forum knows more than I have divulged; and, even if they came across some piece of personal information, they'd've a hard time using it against me in real life; my 'interaction' with most TAs, starts and ends here.

I haven't. I the course of 12+ years on this forum, maybe 4 people knew where I worked, or even had my real name, and that was mostly because they either figured out they had a personal connection to somewhere I worked and they were people in the industry and know how NDA's work so I know I could trust them. I've never met a single TA.

@ Lews - I'll concede this is a subjective argument but I like at least how you can try to qualify your argument pertaining to aesthetics, even though I completely disagree with your sentiments.

I find it funny that the first few times I say that Beemers are tacky, I get a bunch of resistance and my parentage called in to question, now we're got several people agreeing that "most of them are tacky".

I actually couldn't care less about his actual opinions; it's more a case of the I see him quite often chime in utter nonsense as fact and sometimes it's fun to call him out.

Here's another reason why I think BWM are tacky (aside from the design which is tacky itself, see BMW go faster stripes I posted earlier for more info)

At least in the UK, BMW are known for being tacky and the first car someone buys when they get a little bit of cash but can't yet move out of the council estate.

I was trying to buy a property in London before I left in 2007, and no joke - out a dozen estate agents I met in two months 10 of them had BMW's. It was a eye roll moment when they guy in a bad pinstripe suit steps out of his 3 or 5 series and you know the next half hour is going to be them using bull phrases like "dual aspect" (it has two windows) or "funky decor" (not been renovated since 1971) or intimately spaced (ing tiny) or "charming features" (hole) or "area is diverse, melting pot" (in the ing ghetto).

Then I'd watch that twat get back in his silver 3 series, and think to myself: what a ing cock. It is, and always will be the slimey estate agents car if choice and for that alone I will never drive one.
