also i was trying to bait yohan in here to see what he thought... fail on my part. I'm just interested to see what another military person thinks, because ultimately as you said, we don't know what it's like.

The real heroes are those who decide to stand up and speak out against this .
"Those who send us to war do not have to pull a trigger or lob a mortar round. They do not have to fight the war, they merely have to sell the war. They need a public who is willing to send their soldiers into harm's way. They need soldiers who are willing to kill and be killed without question."

what a bunch of redundant, irrelevant bull. you're a ing soldier. politicians don't have to lob a mortar round? really? why did they do so much training in mortar fire if they're never going to use them?
me. what the do these idiots expect exactly? oh, i want to enlist in the military and get all the associated perks, but sending me to war is just WRONG! please excuse me while i go rape some japanese schoolgirls.

It's not war itself, it's the type of war.
There's been wars in American history where yes, the men fighting in them were heroes. The women taking care of business back home were heroes.
This is not that case, IMO.

yawn. warfare and its actors have changed since WW2. it's nice that you've finally caught up with this fact but i am curious why you think it particularly relevant to this topic. ironically it is the smaller states and non-state actors that have engendered the biggest shift in the nature of warfare in the last 60 years, NOT the major players like the US or russia etc.

So do you think soldiers are heroes or not, stary dziadek?
I don't give a what you think.

More like courageous than heroic, but that's not saying there are no heroes at all in the military. It takes a lot of guts to be in a war zone regardless of the reasons for joining. While some perform heroic acts, others do not. I agree that the term is overused though.

I guess these soldiers are all a bunch if idiots. They should just shut up and fight the wars.

^Yes, they are idiots. They signed up for it. Their fault. Don't sign up for something you don't believe in.
