Do you think soldiers are heroes or just byproducts of the system? (pg. 6)

^Yes, they are idiots. They signed up for it. Their fault. Don't sign up for something you don't believe in. |
This.
I JOINED THE KKK BUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING IS WRONG AND MY VOICE WILL BE HEARD IN PROTESTING AGAINST THEIR VIEWS. |

| If you enlisted, you did it knowing full-well what our country has been doing the last 10 years. You signed up. If you want to inform the rest of us how ed the system is, that's needed; but acquiring this victim mentality is not going to help. |

I don't see this "victim" mentality you're talking about.
I see guys who have been there, done that and are standing up and speaking out because of it. I think we need veterans like this who have been there and have a "credible" voice because of their experience. A guy like me, while I'm proud of my decision, can't speak as much as I want because of the stigma associated with me saying the war and finding a way not to go. These guys that have been, though, have every right to say what the they want.
Maybe they joined as byproducts of the system, naive of what they were getting themselves into, and something during their time in the military woke them the up. Not everyone is as educated and enlightened as you gentlemen seem to portray yourselves to be. |

Very well said. These veterans are raising awareness for the rest of the kids who are blindly planning on joining the military. |

| That's fine, you're clearly very upset about this. Speak out. I can't sympathize much because I didn't join, I don't have that perspective. I'm sure it's ty. |

I do agree with you that there are veterans who play the victim card, though, and I think that's where this whole "I'm a hero" mentality comes from. I'm not talking about the guys in these videos. They are clearly ashamed of what they "did for their country" and are trying their best to come to terms with it; voicing themselves seems to be a part of that process.
There's way too many others, though, who embrace the hero mantra and haven't woken up.
Again, I don't blame them. I blame the powers that be.
When you step off that bus in boot camp, their mission (drill sergeants) is to break you down and build you back up. Sure, a lot of this training is necessary to your survival when and if you go to war. But it also blinds a person from realizing what they mean to the system and what they are doing for it. Just another number... and yet the media fuels the public by telling them about the importance of what they're fighting for, the public fuels the soldier by telling them how great of a hero they are because of it, the soldier fuels the system by giving their lives for it. One big domino effect fueling the machine.
So yea, these guys in the videos who stand up and speak out - maybe it's too late for them to change what they did, but they can definitely help someone else avoid it. Then again, some people live in such dire conditions around the country that risking their lives to get a better life for their families doesn't seem so bad. And that's the sad part about all this, IMO. |

| Well, to be fair, the military in general would probably not function as well as it does if they didn't break people down to be subservient. |

Of course. The "break down and build up" is what keeps soldiers alive when at war. Their training.
It's the afterward effects of this "break down and build up" that are sad to see in soldiers, some of whom never find a way back to their true selves. |

Real soldiers don't kill. They write, draw, compose, explore. Create rather than destroy. Unite rather than divide.
Those who dress up in uniforms and swing around with their guns, I cannot call them true warriors. They fight battles to obey not just orders from authorities, but gender roles too.
Patriarchy sucks. Thank goodness I don't have to join the army. |
