Feminism

Ok... so this has really perplexed me and I want to understand why this is.

If you are an advocate for aboriginal rights, "good for you". If you are an advocate for minority rights, "good for you". If you are an advocate for gay/lesbian rights, it's starting to be more of "good for you". But if you are an advocate for women's rights, *cue roll eyes*.

Why is it so stigmatized or considered unacceptable to be a feminist?

I suspect it has something to do with people taking issue with the "bra-burners" etc. aka the radical feminists, or the 'feminazis'. It's similar to people taking issue with Islam in general because there are a few radical Muslims. People declare Islam to be a horrible religion because there are a few extremists. The fundamental difference however, is that extreme feminists have not been harmful to other people in any way (unless I missed something).

Feminisim is in the same strain as any of the other advocacy groups I mentioned - the ultimate goal is to get equality, which I hope most people would agree, is a good/positive thing. With this being said, I can't understand why it is considered so terrible to be a feminist. Why do people take issue with it? And if you only take issue with extreme feminists, why? It isn't like burning bras harms anyone - it's not dangerous behaviour.

A part of me thinks that for men, they take issue with it because they feel it isn't really about equality, but women's desire to be treated better than men. Although I am sure there are some feminists who ascribe to this line of thought, I don't think that is the most common viewpoint.

I am particularly interested to know why women have issues with it, especially since, if it weren't for feminist theories and activists, women wouldn't be allowed to do a lot of things we can today. If I recall correctly, Jennypie has reacted negatively to feminism and I wonder what instigates that.

Because women do not know what they ing want.

There are feminists movements now that want to dispel the idea that women need to be successful outside the home to be worth anything so now they are advocating a return to domestic life... ING JUST DO WHAT YOU WANT.

So the point you're passively trying to make is that you don't think there is any inequality between the sexes and feminists are just crying wolf when there is no reason to. Yes?

Any kind of advocacy group isn't going to be consistent with their beliefs/desires across the board. That hardly seems like a valid reason to dislike them.

No it was a joke. Hahaha, funny right? I don't do the whole "passive" angle, but to legitimately answer your question, the reason why there's more momentum amongst issues of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc., is because they are more of an issue unless you're in Afghanistan central where woman cant drive cars or have to wear a burkha. This is not to say that sexism doesn't exist but compared to other discrimination it might as well not. Over these past couple years more women have attended college then men. I believe that in due time, women will be paid more than men going withe demographic trends.

So are feminists crying wolf? No ... but they have a smaller leg to stand on than other minorities imo. So are you going to make me ing dinner or what?

Probably because its an anachronism as much as luddites and communists are and most of the original political movements in the western world have already been achieved.
About the only thing that still needs some work is in the industrial relations area in terms of equal pay and maternity leave which is still treated subjectively by employers who try to dodge around laws.
