yes, and i have 2 of derek howells most recent releases. trust me, there are VERY similiar elements in both of those tracks which you can hear are reused. |
but none of his tracks are boring and unimaginative though :conf:
compare his mix of magnetic north, to we're gonna be okay
or frozen to might as well do this (while we still can)
some sounds may be similar, but thats a trademark, the tracks are completely different
I'd like to see you pick up on the other producers I mentioned :stongue: |

is that the "make 10 tracks the same, just change the melody" sound? |

Something a bit more original than a different permutation of the same samples, at least. Breaking past usual track structures is even better. |
Yeah, + what you said. :p |

Definitely. I'm objective enough to be able to see that. What I think though, is that the producers should try something new in everything they do, like Sasha does. |
Who knows if when everyone likes what Sasha does/plays, u'll be out here calling he's cheesy :stongue: |

Most everyone already likes it, and if not they respect it. |

People do like Sasha. He's been one of the top 5 DJs for the past 5 years, but he's also been able to change his sound. That's what I admire about him. |

I'm gonna have to agree with your opinion about his vocals tracks back then. Heck, that whole sound was a trademark for the early nineties' pop music.
But he changed. And he'll change again. |

Cool. Someone who cant take jokes. I was saying that to Ory as he's mentioned earlier, he listens to stuff that is not overplayed. |

hehe i can't.... but you saying that all his tracks sound the same are false. look, he's definitely not my favorite producer. not even close. personally i would choose benz & md or maybe junkie xl, or kasey taylor & chris meehan for prog. but i'm saying, everyone uses simliar elements in all their songs. probspots are just more unique. you can't say his tracks all sound the same because they don't. compare probspot - blueberry, with probspot - midnight, or probspot - bobcat, or even foreplay. those do not sound the same at all. but they were all released this year as well. |

I understand what you're saying here, but with all due respect it indicates that you don't have the musical experience that others in this thread do. |
Actually I am going on 10 years of listening to EDM and Trance. I was sucked into trance in 1993 when the cool thing was the UK breakbeat stuff with at annoying speeds. I found refuge in trance. Harfloor, Jam El Mar, Illuminate. I then evolved into the UK prog sound. Labels like Limbo, Deconstruction, Hardhands. From there I became a Sasha & Digweed fan. Northern exposure with its beautiful soundscapes opened me up to a much more peaceful sound of EDM. As Sasha & Digweed started getting deeper, I followed along too. After Communicate" I think they peeked for me. Instead of going musical again, at that point they became too deep for my tastes. I was frustrated with prog/trance for about 2 years. And then I heard Markus Schulz. For me he Continued where Sasha & Digweed left me at 2 years earlier.

You reference an "in your face super saw" as contrast to why you like American prog, which indicates to me that you've merely realized epic super saws to be overused and unimaginative. Everyone who gets hooked on trance has a time when they realize that, and for many of us speaking against American progressive, it was years ago.
|
As you can tell from my timeline, I was never into the supersaw sound. I always looked for deeper more meaningful music right at the very begining.
| quote: | | You cite American prog as "subtle and deep." I don't mean to belittle that opinion, but compared to the past ten years of progressive house and trance, it's incredibly simple and obvious.. |
House music has always been very simple. Its about the feeling and vibe. The EDM genre has always had a cycle of going from overly produced mega tunes with all the bells and whistles and then goes back to the basic vibe of the groove. I find this genre of music to be very refresing for me. It has the feeling of the early days with the big massive basslines, yet still has very catchy melodies on top. At the end of the day, I want melodies with my grooves.
| quote: | | American progressive isn't that bad. Eurotrance is a much worse offense. But compared to what progressive dance has to offer, it's not good either. Certainly not worthy of the hype around here it has received. |
Again for me, this has been my evolution and I just cant relate too music without melodies. I feel much more comfortable with music that has a story to it, instead of the true progressive music that only relies on noises. Sure some of those noises are really cool, but like I said, at the end of the day...melodies is what puts a smile on my face. From the days of labels like Harthouse and Eye Q to todays GDJB/ASOT sounds, it is the feeling that I get. |

So far, the electro sound isn't very overplayed at all. Atleast I don't think it is, since it's not in my face everywhere I go. :p |
