WOW ... is all I can say. Before the race started ... I made a simple guess as to how the finish would look: I guessed that Alonso would be first, Trulli 2nd, Michael 3rd, and Ralf 4th. I got 3 out of 4 right ... and Michael's retirement was quite shocking .... his first mechanical retirement in 4 years.

Ferrari clearly made a mistake releasing the F2005 so early without proper testing. And after only 11 laps, Michael's tires were pretty worn out. The problem is that Michael pushes the car really hard, and tire wear will be a big issue for him, even if they sort out the mechanics. Barichello for example had big tire wear, and he ended up losing pace. I can just imagine what condition Michael's tires would have been in if he made it to the finish.

This season is looking more and more interesting.

Just as I suspected, the new rules would cause trouble for Ferrari, as they had become cocky being dominant and comfortable with the old rules. Just goes to show, Ferrari is not the unstoppable team fans say it is.

Incredible job by Alonso, but as well, by Toyota. Toyota scored 2nd and 4th place, which is amazing. Ralf was really close to getting a podium finish. It's only a matter of time until we see both Toyotas on the podium.

BAR was dissapointing, although not surprising. Last race it was engine problems, and this race was brake problems. In both situations, the heat is deadly for Honda. Looks like the brakes don't like the heat, just as Honda's engines don't like the heat.

Sahkir was a tough race; it was hot, sweltering in fact, very dry, and on top of that, sand on the track. It was great to see the Toyotas running effortlessly, as well as the Renaults.

I am really looking forward to this season, and especially how and if Ferrari will improve.

One important thing to remember is that as Ferrari improves, the competition is not standing still. Especially not Renault and Toyota.

pretty good analysis;)

Well...3 races down and Renault are still on fire! Good stuff! Too bad the Ferrari 2005 debute wasn't what I hoped it would be but there's lots of time to go still. Hopefully he Ferrari boys can get their stuff together and get back to their winning ways.

I think there are a few things you are over looking.
1) Ferrari was on the soft tire, in order to be competitive, it was obviously the wrong choice for that type of heat. It was so soft it was basically melting away with the high track temp.

2) Ferrari can adapt, and have done so in the past. This is not the first year that the rules have been changed, they have been changing regularly for the last 4-5 years, pretty much at the start of Ferrari's domination. I would say that they are very resourceful having thought of a way around the new regs by introducing their car late in the season.

This is the firs time in 5years(i think) that the Ferrari has not won on its debut race, give them a little slack, you cant be perfect all the time. ;)

My fav drive of the race was from De la Rosa, cause he knew he had 1 race to get his racing fix. He is a test driver and just puts in laptimes most of the year. He finally got a chance to harrass some racers since 2002, well done. Even though he did make a lot of mistakes, i forgive him, he provided lots of entertainment.

Stupid Rubino used up his tires in the first few laps, but he did gain like 10 spots! too bad he lost a few of them in the closing stages of the race.

I think Ferrari's biggest problem this year is not the car, its the tires. In the past they had become a disposable team. Engine no good? throw it out, put in another one. Use the tires as much as posible, and come in get a new set, get out. Bridgstone just does not have the testing miles to be able to build a tire for every condition. How are they gonna build a tire for Bahrain, from testing at Fiorino? NOT HAPPENING

The Bridgstone rubber should be more competitive at tracks like Monico, Hungary, small twisty bits, with moderate heat.

True .... it was a bad idea using a soft tire compound ... but either way, Ferrari made a mistake.

If Ferrari's problem is not the car ... then what gives with the gearbox problems Barichello had, and the hydraulic failure of Schumacher? Ferrari can no longer follow a "throw it out, put a new one in" type of philosophy. Engines must last longer now, as well as tires. Michael needs to lose some of his cockyness, and be more careful watching his tires. Even at Imola with the right compound, Michael will need to watch it.

For what it's worth ... after the race ... news from the Renault camp came in that Alonso wasn't even at full revs for the first few laps, because he was fighting off Michael. Now, it seemed to me Michael was pushing himself quite hard. If Alonso was holding back, this could mean that the F2005 in it's current form is slower than Renault's R25.

Something else to consider is that Michael was in fact running a lighter fuel load, and he probably would have pitted earlier than Alonso or Trulli. By the end of the race, Michael potentially would have had to make an extra pit due to the light load at the beginning of the race. It would have been interesting to see.

You also have to give credit to Toyota. They've been in the sport for only 3 years ... and I don't care what anyone says about their budget because succeeding in F1 is mostly about skill and experience, not money. Ferrari has a HUGE amount of experience in F1. Sure, Toyota has experience in other types of motorsport, but they are not as specialized as Ferrari is in F1.

In comparison, BAR Honda has been around for 6 years, and it's an interesting relationship in this case. Most of the car is built by BAR, with Honda I think only supplying the engine, and some transmission parts.

This is in contrast to Toyota, where everything is all made by Toyota. To reach this much in only 3 years is amazing for Toyota I think, when faced with other teams who have decades of experience.

^^

The f2005 was definatly slower than the R25, no doubt about it. All your points were correct, but in the end, i still thought it was the right strategy, because the f2004-ga was too slow, and they wouldnt have got any points anyways. They had to just 'giver er', lol.

In terms of Toyota, this is their fourth season in f1, and i would count it as their fifth with a car. Before their first season, they has 1 entire year of testing. The specifically finished a car 1 year in advance, and just went to Paul Richard to test for a full year!!! Thats no laughing matter. Most teams just finish their car before their debut season, maybe a month or two ahead of time, not a full year. THey had Mika Salo and Allen Mcnish just running lap after lap. Mika Salo had loads of experience, and Allen, well he didnt live up. Toyota also brought in Mike Gascoyin, who is supposed to be one of the best designers on the grid.

I believ Toyota had lots of experience on their side, even if it was all bought. The fact is that BAR/Honda, and Toyota, even took this long to get proper cars under them, is a testimon to the fact that you not only need money, not only experienced staff, you need an experienced car. you need to get a rhythm you need to know what works with YOUR car and what doesnt.

And Toyota finally got a pair of drivers who have the race/testing experience under them, and both drivers know how to win. Very important. Young drivers can get excited and throw it away.

lol who told you? and wiked Pic!! I will def. be bringing my cam, i'm expecting you to be a tour guide since I haven't been to Montreal since I was 12!

I picked up the canon EF-S 17-85MM F4.0-5.6 IS USM on friday. It's a great lens, the Image stabilization makes up for the slow focal but I needed a good all round travel lens that has the ultrawide and telephoto capabilities without switching lenses.
