Just finished CD2 after skipping through a few tracks i already know well.
The tempo slows down completely for 04. LNQ - People I Used To Know and messes the flow up completely. The track makes up for fit though :D, lovely drawn out synths and stabby effects overlapping. Seamless transition into 05. Mads Arp featuring Julie Harrington - Slow It Down (Mathilda Mix) restores my faith in Tiesto, no intro/outro beats, just straight into the goregous melody with lush vocals from Julie :D, mixing into 06. Dominic Plaza - Sounds Rushing is even better! albeit the crossfader seems to be getting hammered this time :D. Tiesto had to include 'Sounds Rushing', it'd be a tradegy not too, but at this stage? 1/3 of the way through. Its an epic prog tune, would have made a nice intro or finisher. /QUOTE]
I think you as a reviewer should have said something about the fact that the two cd's of ISOS 4 are meant to be one long expedition. The higher tempo of cd 2 is because he begins this cd with the pace he has ended cd 1 with.
Furthermore is it therefore logical that Tiesto slows down at track number 4 again and that he has a little break of slower tracks. He uses Sounds Rushing as a transitional track.
I have read a lot of people's comments so far in which they state not to understand the order of the tracks but as far I have heard them they make sense.
As long as I have known and followed Tiesto (since 1998) he has been known for his setbuilding. In sets of around 3 hours he always does what he has done here on ISOS IV. Slow start, faster more uplifting midsection, then a few slower tracks to give people a breather and then an uptempo more serious sounding last part of the set.
I think, if you know this and look at the tracklists of the two cd's not as two single cd's but as one complete set, that the order of tracks will start to make a lot more sense.
For the rest, thanks for the review :D
Cheers,

Don't forget that this is a CD-mix and not a liveset-mix. On a CD you just can't create the same atmosphere as you can during a live set. A CD (especially in case of an ISOS CD!) must be constructed well and should have a flow including smooth transitions without people need cringing because of clashing tracks.
Don't get me wrong, I heaven't heard the CD yet but the track selection and the comments in this review won't do any favour to my expectations to be honest... |

Why is it that some people think the only way to mix a CD is by starting soft and gradually, oh so gradually, progressing to more uptempo tracks? I don't understand why DJs get bashed for quick changes in style in the context of a mix album. There's nothing at all wrong with abrupt changes. If everyone mixed the same way, how boring would that be?
Having said that, I haven't heard the album, but people need to realize that a CD need not fit your apparently ideal structure to be an enjoyable listen. |

Anyone with any true sense of music realises that it doesnt have to conform to any set standards. But its only their opinions though. Tempo and Rhythm is an important part of the flow of a Mix to some people, hence why they need a mix that flows gradually. |

Abrupt changes can work but only if it makes sense in the flow of the mix itself. Otherwise, it just sounds like a guy playing song after song without much forethought. |

It'll be interesting to hear how it turns out.
Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that people are complaining about the poor mixing and saying ISOS4 is doomed to ruin the ISOS tradition? OK ISOS1 is very well mixed I think. Especially for how old it is. ISOS2 though, summerbreeze to touch me, they don't go. Cass & Slide Perception to Mekka Diamondback? He doesn't really even attempt a mix there. Etc.
But the point is I think it's a great CD. And I think (pending actually having the cd to listen to) that ISOS4 can also be great.
I mean it sounds like Tiesto mixed this on turntables? I listened to AvB - A State of Trance 2005. Which I hear he mixed with ableton? Holy cow, no beats slip there, everything is spot on, it's a great cd. But there's also something to be said about the old fashioned way.
Just a thought. |
