Kind of late on the review for this film, but as aria_clubber pointed out earlier we saw Lynch's BLUE:nervous:VELVET about a week ago (give or take) and I have a blast every time I watch this movie but this time it was double the fun because I got to watch it with a couple of friends who've never seen the movie before.
Now, if you've never done it, do it: watch a Lynch film you know well with someone who's never seen it before (and someone who appreciates a good film obviously) and just observe their reaction!
Lynch is a madman we all know that. Blue Velvet for me stands out from all his films together with Eraserhead as the Lynch movies. If you want to see how far Lynch's imagination really goes watch Eraserhead. But, if you want to see what Lynch does with theme and mood, watch Blue Velvet...
Hakim described the movie quite nicely, so I don't have to get into the details, but for me what this whole movie boils down to is: things aren't what they appear to be on the surface, in this case: the surface is pretty, calm and comforting while when dug deeper you find an ugly and disturbed world .
The opening shot perrfectly describes this in a few minutes. White picket fenses , Dad is watering the garden while the Golden Retriever plays with the son and you get the picture, at one point the camera zooms in the grass and crawls forward and deeper (signature ominous mood music at this point of course) until we see the ugly and disturbing interior. (Represented by bugs in this case)
One of the things I always associate Lynch to is the unsettling mood he creates and in Blue Velvet it works wonders. The story is so simple, the people from the town are so normal they are boring, so anything abnormal
makes you pay so much more attention. If you were to meet Frank Booth in real life you'd be unsettled forever.... ...Dennis Hopper did such a good job that I wouldnt wanna meet him either :haha:
Im gonna stop right here because I can go on for a long time and I doubt half the people on the board will read this, Im just gonna end it with WATCH. THIS. MOVIE. if you haven't already, because it's one of those films that leave a big impression, and if anything it's just great to see a movie with that kind of power.

man im stunned that u didnt like mulholland drive, and calling it a B movie  is blasphemy !! it's such a masterpiece, just bought it yesturday :gsmile: , and i can't wait to watch it again.
I know that this movie isnt easy to understand the first time u watch it. with some art films u really have to take ur time, be patient and be aware of every single detail.+ u didnt even finish it ,and the ending is sooooooooo important in lynch's films !!
i know that this movie is kinda of a labyrinth but this is exactly what lynch wants, u wants to play with ur mind like a toy.
blue velvet:

in my group of freinds, I'm the one who's the most in ed up movies and the ones which are the hardest to understand. Kubrick is my movie god btw.
But this one, i don't know, great suspense, great lesbian scenes, but damn i just didn't get it... it was way too slow, even though I'm kind of into slow movies. |
