Personally, I think Toronto is pretty spoiled with the amount of talent/DJ's and Producers that roll in here! so let's just enjoy and stop complaining ffs.

To just enjoy and stop complaining to me means that we're giving up on our expectations and hopes for our scene. There HAS to be some kind of standard, if we truly want to put ourselves on the map.
I think we're doing ok, but it could clearly be better. I agree that I think a lot of what we get is pretty average. I'd rather have quality over quantity.
Toronto IS trying to put itself on the map, right? Cause it seems like it's trying to...and if it isn't, then I think our ego is slightly overinflated. |

I don't know how this debate went from international dj's sucking hard to toronto not being on the map.
I agree 100% that there were a disproportionate amount of dissapointments over the last year, but couldn't disagree more that toronto is not on the map.
Toronto has become far and away the biggest scene in Canada, the bookings here now easily outdo montreal, which was not the case a short time ago.
DJ's rave about how much they like playing here in interviews all the time.
Peter Gatien claimed that he thinks Toronto is on the verge of being something really great, and that it feels like New York used to.
So some DJ's didn't play their best sets ever this year, some others did. Doesn't mean toronto's not on the map. |

Agree 200%. Also some djs haven't had the chance to come here whereas others come TOO often here for there to be others who would make the scene more bumping. |

I really think that many dj's underestimate toronto for some reason.
Many dj's come here (especially first timers) and play some of the tracks that our locals have been hammering for months and expect people to like the set. An example would be Bad Boy Bill, Axwell etc.
But dj's that have been coming for years and years know that Toronto is one of the best places to play at in NA. |

It's up to the DJ to do that though, and some of our more prominent locals are happy to be spinning for the same guys in the same bars 5 nights a week.
It's a decent paying living, but you're never going to have the time to produce and market yourself internationally with that kind of local bookings schedule. |
I'd agree that it's mostly up to the DJ, but not entirely. From the party/club goers, to the promoters to all the other factions that make up our "scene", it takes everybody to make that push.
And how do you know exactly that the "more prominent locals are happy to be spinning for the same guys in the same 5 bars 5 nights a week"? You say it as if they're content at the plateau they've reached, with no desire to push further. That's just an assumption on your part*

Same here, lol...I'm pretty sure I understand the context in which she delivered that line though, so I'll take it as a compliment :p |

Agree with you on that point...almost as if they underestimate our knowledge and understanding of the music in certain ways.
To me I've been most impressed with International/Headlining DJ's when they drop a set where I BARELY can name a single tune. |

For me, the only party that stands out musicly is:
1) John Digweed @ Dragonfly
i havent been to many parties since, but i just keep getting dissapointed. |

The decision to spin 5+ gigs a week, to me, means they are happy with that...because it's pretty difficult to make the move towards international recognition with that kind of schedule.
local DJs that have gotten significant, sustained recognition outside of Canada as both a producer and a DJ at one point, purposely scaled back those bookings to focus on achieving international attention. |

In no way am I saying that Toronto isn't on the map, but there could definitely be more done in the way of appreciating, recognizing and marekting our own talent. As others have said, there've been numerous times that our locals step up and SCHOOL the headlining DJ, a major example of that being Lee Osborne @ FW (opening both for Wink & Burridge).
I've always believed that Toronto has been a signifigant part of the North American scene as a whole, however we're not too far off from being recognized internationally. |
