I agree. Thats the sucky part, that if you wanted to go out with all or most or a good deal of your friends for a good set, its unfortunately only gonna be for the big DJs 9.5 times out of 10! :(

Outside of Guv, there is a HUGE variety of parties going on. More genres then you even know existed, in venues from abandoned movie studios to art galaries. It's just no one wants to go to these parties because "everyone is going to Guv". |
So true again (unfortunately) ... though you could of course sub in Sonic/TIL/etc in there too.
Totally reminds me of Attending Chris Liberator at The Big Bop... no one came, even the ppl who were originally gonna come bc in teh end, everyone ended up at Guv |

Toronto has been accustomed to a certain sound and type of party. If a DJ comes in here and sways from that they get less than stellar reviews.

Poor Lee Burridge gets told what to play at ing CoZo. sway people, sway! |

| i think my biggest disappointment this year was that Global Gathering wasnt a techno party where as the previous 2 were. this is prbly the only BIG event that i really look forward to @ the Guv and they ruined it for me (bastards). that and Guv 10 year. i didnt even go to the 10 year cuz the line-up just didnt even compare to last year's. instead i went to see the less popular Heather & Colette @ Sonic and it was one of the best parties of the year for me. im just tired of the "A-list" djs/parties cuz i just get disappointed. |

Sleeparchive @ Sud99 blew me away - the best LivePA I've heard.
Adam Beyer @ Sud99 - Kicked my ass left right and center, great party
Audion @ Footwork - Left the club feeling dirty and abused in the best possible way
I didn't get out nearly as often this year as I did last year, decided to play responsible and focus on school - but I've been to a few great parties, and there have been a number of parties that I wanted to goto but couldnt make it. |

Really?
I hardly go out at all (at least for the music anyways) so when I do, it's for a particular event that I've planned for and am particularly excited about.
I mean, I go out casually and meet friends for drinks, say at places like footwork, or the new fukhouse night, but I'm not there really for the DJ with big expectations. It's probably only a few times a year I go to hear a DJ specifically and they can make or break the night.
I fully agree we get a lot of average performances in this city - probably because the DJs booked by the guv guys get booked at least once a year, often more. It is the DJs that come here once in a blue moon that put on the best performances - and in my experience, these are the DJs that are booked by smaller promoters in smaller venues that really take the time and effort to create an event that is about the music, not the money. |

I do not think it's a matter of us setting the bar too high but rather us liking things a certain way. And by us I obviously mean clubland Toronto. |
I also agree with this. I think it really comes down to
what sound ur REALLY into at the time of the show |

I thought you spun at fukhouse? So you don't have big expecatations about your own set? lol confusing

Well said and some interesting points being made, I like the fact that this thread perpetuates your argument, cool. |

Funny how much we differed in our opinion of armin that night... esp since I am (or was) the bigger trance fan... but other trance heads agree w/ you MK, so I have to just chalk it up to me and my fading interest in dancing to trance all night |
Haha, you kill me Jamie.
I would chalk it up to you being asleep in the booth for most of the set. |

I think overall...for me....2006 has been the worst year for EDM this century in Toronto. International DJs have been predictable and for the most part boring....I can only think of two International DJs I saw in 2006 that actually excited me about the music again. Maybe my age is catching up to me and I've seen too much but this year has been almost a complete flop.
There have been many surprising local talents this year but very few of them are from Toronto. The Toronto "Big Name" DJs have been as big a bore as the international DJs. M & S have made it big this year but I can't stand them....I just want to rip my ears off every time they spin.....I have not gone to events just because they would be spinning. Dekoze....I haven't seen as much from him this year but the only times I've enjoyed his sets were at Cozo. Miss Blu has been great but it seems like she is at every venue and almost whoring herself to the scene.
I hope next year is better or I may have seen my last event. |

Don't look at it like two sides of a fence, its more like the joust event from american gladiators where Jon is standing on top of a tower in a unitard with a foam batton trying to hit everyone.
