im thinking I will take advantage of our strong dollar and head to buffalo one of these days to pick up a nice shiney new TV. so I just have a few quick questions ...

- plasma vs lcd? which should I go for?

- what is a good brand to look out for?

- are there any spec's that I should be looking for when looking for my new TV?!

Plasma and lcd are virtually the same, except plasma is more expensive and even more expensive to fix although the plasma tube
should last about 5 years. All the top brands are worthwhile in buying ie: Sony, Panasonic, Sanyo etc. If you want the best quality definitely look for something in 1080p.

i suppose that could have been intrpretted as advice against buying a plasma. it is fairly unclear. but plasma is less expensive than lcd and youd be lucky to get five years out of one before having to repair it. many of the leading manufacturers dont even produce plasma sets anymore. that fact should be pretty useful in informing a purchase

honestly, its not worth it. have you heard any of the stories about what its like at the border these days? hours to cross not to mention the unbelievably busy stores. not worth it in my opinion.

there might be warrant issues as well. not to mention it would be a pain in the ass if you had to return the set for some reason. plus duty

Superstring
42'' or 37'' Sharp Aquos LCD TV is your best bet.

It costs a touch more than some of the competition, but still less than Sony branded crap. Reviewed on dozens of web sites, and found to be the best overall.

I own one, and 2 of my friends own one - no complaints whatsover.

I have been looking at getting a TV lately, so I'll give you the info I've gotten.

Plasma has a better reaction time when it comes to things like football or any kind of sports. On the lower end LCD's you will see traces across the screen that you won't with a Plasma. When it comes to plasma, Pioneer makes the best product. It uses much less energy(up to 80% I believe) compared to other Plasmas BUT is quite expensive. Sharp and Hitacha LCD tvs are great, specially because they have very little reflection, which is wicked for a bright room(if that is an issue). Plasmas and LCDS both have the same approximate life span, so that doesn't really play a big factor, although the Pioneer plasma is supposed to last a lot longer due to some of the technology they use.

Another thing to look at is the proccesing rate & response times. The newer Sharp & Sony models have a 120hz processor. This helps in reducing the tracing I was talking about in sports.

I personally think Sharp is the best TV for the price. The 120hz 46'84U model goes for $2599 now I believe. If sports aren't the main reason for your purchase, the 64U model is on sale for $1999 at furtureshop(still a great tv). Sharp also has a much better response time over most other LCD tvs. I think they are 4ms compared to Sony which is 8ms.

Hope this helps a bit lol
