| quote: | CHICAGO (AP) -The chief executive officer of the Tribune Company says he won't hesitate to sell the naming rights to Wrigley Field - even if baseball purists don't like the idea.
During an interview on CNBC, Sam Zell says despite Wrigley Field being known worldwide, he didn't get a discount because he wasn't going to use the naming rights that the field represents.
Zell said he plans to sell the Cubs and Wrigley separately and in his own time frame. He also disclosed that Major League Baseball has approved "four or six" potential ownership groups and that any one of them would be fine.
The sale of the team has been delayed by Zell's plan to sell the team and the stadium separately, and to have a state agency acquire and renovate Wrigley. |
i wonder what the odds are that a beer company will buy the naming rights. |

Except Josh Beckett is the best pitcher in the game... Santana is extraordinary... but you take Beckett 8 out of 10 times over Santana.... unless you only care about stats.... |
LOL. Dude. You do realize that Beckett had a better record last year entirely because of run support, yes? Santana lost multiple games 1-0. I'll take a pitcher giving up 1 run any day of the week.
Damn, it really sucks being a Minnesota fan. First Ortiz, then Randy, then KG, now Torii and Johan. :( :( :(
The salary cap should be lowered to like $20 million. For all sports. |

Nah, the NFL's got it down pat.
MLB is like the community college next to the elite private college of the NFL when it comes to management, and Bud's the guy who thinks that all those other buildings are just a different part of the campus. |

new rules for 2008
| quote: | NEW YORK -- Base coaches in the big leagues will have to stay inside their boxes this season.
Major League Baseball announced a few rule amendments Thursday, including one that came a season after Double-A coach Mike Coolbaugh was killed by a line drive to the neck.
Starting this year, first- and third-base coaches must not cross the lines toward home plate or the field until batted balls pass them. Only then can they take up other spots to guide runners.
Third-base coaches routinely stand much closer to the plate than the lines permit, trying to get a better look at where outfielders are positioned.
In November, general managers decided big league base coaches must wear protective headgear this year, starting with exhibition games.
Other amendments adopted by the Playing Rules Committee will be tried on an experimental basis in the Class A New York-Penn and Northwest leagues.
Pitchers will have 15 seconds, rather than the previous 12 seconds, to deliver the ball. The time will start when the pitcher gets the ball.
Also, after three or more visits to the mound by a manager or coach without taking out a pitcher, the fourth mound trip will result in a pitcher automatically being pulled.
In addition, only one infielder at a time will be allowed to visit the mound. |
I like how the rules are removing some of the more annoying stalling tactics, like the nonstop visits to the mounds. Everything else listed gets a "meh" from me |

Wow, everyone around here anyway LOVES Camden Yards....
do you think the new Nats park will take crowds away from Camden Yards?
I guess we'll have to see if it has the same special feel... |

It will def. take crowds away from Camden, as even RFK before it did. Before the Nats came I was an Orioles fan, and would go to Baltimore a few times a year to watch the games. Since the Nats came to town I haven't been back. Even my friends in Prince George's county in MD are Nationals fans and not Orioles fans, and why not? the metro goes into MD and connects to the park in DC. |
