ok gentlmen... I'll end this right now, my coch is biggest, so the END!
but for like the fourth time ever in SD history, Juice is right, Rockabye is the biggest bandwagon bitch ever...
and this is coming from me... I can admit I've hopped on a few bandwagons in my time... the greatest being jumping off the Drew Bledsoe bandwagon... and on the Tom Brady bandwagon... In WEEK 16 in 2000... yeah a week before the Oakland Raiders snowbowl... yeah... 7 years with Drew... hardest jump I ever had to do... but it was the right choice... and thats why I will never have ANYTHING negative to say about Brady... cause it took me so long to finally give up on Drew and go with Tom... and he hasn't disappointed since!
but yeah... bandwagoning is fine, as long as you admit it... you know..."hello, my name is rockabye, and i'm a bandwagon bitch..." |

I admit I'm on a bandwagon... the Cowboys bandwagon... I jumped on it during their championship years in the early 90's.
but that's the only bandwagon I'm on.
but think what you want me > u anyway ;) |

I watched the first two innings yesterday and today before work.
If Rich Harden stays healthy, he'll probably be the best pitcher in the AL. But I think I say that every year. |

Walk-off home run - pretty good way for the Nats and their fans to open up their new park
Exciting start to the season in North America |

Wooooooooot! I just got back from the game!
Best ballpark in the country, hands down. Our seats were literally forty feet from the Five Guys though... only made it to the third inning before the delicious smell made me drop $15 on a beer and a burger. But overall a really cool experience - the neighborhood has some development work to go, but the ballpark is simply magnificent. And the atmosphere was electric too - not sure if that will last since the Nats aren't that great and there aren't that many established Nats fans yet (still Orioles country), but I'm definitely going to be getting to a lot of games this summer!

Which other ballparks have you been to?
What's your favorite part of the park?
Signature concession item?
I WANT DETAILS! :o :p |

Haha, sure.
I wasn't planning on going to the game at all, but I got a call at like 4:00 from a friend who was going who said that one of the people in their group backed out, so they had an extra ticket. So I get ready real quick and drive down to RFK, where they were offering free parking with a shuttle to the new stadium. The bus service was amazing - walk right up, load a bus, and it leaves within a few minutes. They had something like 30 buses running, so there was virtually no wait coming to or from the stadium to the parking lots. Tons of people seemed to take advantage of this, and it beats waiting for a crowded Metro.
I got there early to meet my friends for some tail-gating outside the stadium. When you round the corner and see it for the first time, it is pretty awesome. The part of the District it is in is not heavily used - mostly parking lots, abandoned warehouses, and a few government buildings. They're targeting the area for development over the next few years, but prior to building the stadium there wasn't much happening there, so it is still semi-dead. The stadium really stands out as a result.
After grilling a few burgers and downing a few beers, we headed over to get in line, but realized that it stretched halfway around the stadium and wasn't moving. Seems the Secret Service was patting every single person down since G. W. was throwing out the first pitch. So even though we got in line at 6:45 (first pitch scheduled for 8:05), we weren't sure if we were going to make it in on time. But we overheard some people walking the opposite direction say that if you go through the parking garage that is attached to the stadium, you can take the elevator straight to the mezzanine and there is no line. So we got out of line, and it worked like a charm. We were in by 7:00.
They were giving out a lot of free promo stuff - a program, a lanyard with a pouch to put your ticket, and towels embroidered with "Nationals Stadium Inauguration - Opening Day March 30, 2008" which was cool. We took a stroll around the perimeter of the stadium to check out all the vendors, etc. There are two sit-down restaurants with sweet views of the field, but I'm sure it's pricy. They have a lot of the normal stadium fare (hot dogs, pretzels, etc.) but a few things that stood out. We found a place where import beers were cheaper than domestics (I got a Stella for 7.00, but the Miller Lite was 8.00). So that was win. They also have a place with "fare from around the league" - apparently regional foods from other parts of the country that sell in other stadiums. Long line, didn't get a look at the menu. There is a cajun place that also has Chesapeake crab cakes. And then there's Five Guys - best burger joint on the east coast. Huge line, took us two innings to get our food, but definitely worth it.
Our seats were just below the scoreboard jumbotron - largest HD screen in the world apparently. They blocked off our section at 7:45 so we weren't able to get to our seats for the opening pitch, which was annoying, but we were able to stand behind another section and see the field. Got some good pictures of the presenting of the colors by members of the armed forces color guard, then a few jets flew overhead. During the national anthem there were fireworks, and for the first pitch the President came out. Resounding boos - actually it was kind of embarrassing. I didn't vote for the guy or anything, but I thought it was a bit disrespectful. Hardly heard any cheering at all.
Once the game got underway we got to our seats - the view was awesome. The press box is behind home plate, and looks pretty cool from the outfield. The field looked impeccable as well. Close to capacity crowd... I believe the game sold out weeks ago. Will be interesting to see if the interest dies down once the novelty of the new park wears off - but the atmosphere was pretty awesome.
As to comparisons with other parks... I've been to the Metrodome (Twins), Busch Stadium (Cardinals), Great American Ballpark (Reds), Camden Yard (Orioles), RFK (old Nationals), and Jacob's Field (Indians). It bears the most resemblance to the park in Cincinnati, which is also pretty new, but I liked this one a bit more. There is more open space and the vendors seem better. The mezzanine entrance is realllly nice at this park. It's also cool because as you walk around the concourse area you can always see the field (just like at the park in Cincinnati). So even if you're walking to the bathroom, waiting in line for a hot dog, or get to the game late or whatever, you can still see what's going on in the game.
Was a bit cold tonight (upper 30's), but come May this is going to be one fun venue. I am already looking at the calendar to see A. how many games I can afford to go to and B. which series look the most fun this summer.
Definitely recommend coming to a Nats game. :)
Hope that is better for you. |
