yeh its called "tranceaddict" but there is a large number of people on here that im sure dont come on here looking for trance related events/djs. or dont even like trance for that fact.

i mean, i like to listen to trance on my own. but come on, in a club, you cant get down and dirty and shake your body on that .

No, I don't *personally* know his account, but I doubt that you know either. What I DO know is that he has/had several other clubs, and that he has a lot of rich friends.

Forgive me if I don't feel sorry for Gatien or if I don't fully believe him when he says he had some money trouble. Considering his problems and controversy he caused with authorities in NYC, his record is not exactly spotless. He's been in the club scene for a LONG time, and I will bet you anything that he would not have opened Circa if he had money troubles.

Gatien having investors for Circa was as much about getting through all the legal loopholes as it was about the money. Gatien likely would never overcome all the hoops and paperwork to open Circa had it not been for the help of his friends ... erm I mean investors.

It also helped that so many celebrities have been to Circa.

You sound like you really dont know what your talking about..Toronto saturated with minimal? Where, I'd love to be there if this is the case!

I did not say *just* minimal, I mentioned minimal together with electro and house. Where can I start with examples; for one thing we have Sander Van Doorn coming to Toronto now quite often. Before you say he's not minimal, I know he's not but he incorporates minimal elements into his sets and productions.

Richie Hawtin has been to Toronto a few times, and he's a combination of minimal and techno.

No, Toronto has not seen a huge number of *pure* minimal acts, but plenty of people who spin minimal techno, minimal electro, minimal house etc.

Minimal is a broad term like house, and Toronto scene has seen enough minimal in various forms and sub-genres.

I don't expect a club to book what you will call "cutting edge" talent week after week. I'm not so naive to think that we, the "music savvy" partiers, are as critical to a large club's success as having some mass appeal. We are the VAST MINORITY in the overall club scene at Circa, Guv, TiL and any other large-ish club.

I expect something different and TALENT to be booked. Circa is booking talent and if I only go once or twice a month, that's just fine...because the rest of the city has something to offer too.

I think expectations are running a wee bit too high for Circa, given it's size and length of time it's been open. A smaller venue (like Footwork) is far better equipped to cater to a more "savvy" EDM crowd who want to see more "cutting edge" talent brought in.

I would love to see some good minimal techno DJs like Dustin Zahn or Dirtybird booked for Toronto. Who's going to take that chance though...a big club like Circa or a smaller place like Footwork who can fill their venue from TA and Tribe alone for that type of night?

I think another problem is that Gatien himself along with his friends were hyping up the club before it opened, saying it would push Toronto's scene in a new direction and all this other awesome stuff.

In interviews he's admitted to saying that we wanted Circa to appeal to celebrities, socialities, and art lovers, not just clubbers. So straight from Gatien himself we can see that Circa is not about the music or about the clubbing experience; it's more about being some sort of novelty or oddity.

if that's the case, Gatien is an idiot.

Toronto is not New York. We don't have celebrities, socialites, etc. on a scale that even *remotely* approches social scenes in other major world cities.

lol not even new york was ever like that. you would get the odd celebrity show up at certain clubs but not in the way that say LA would. toronto would never be able to turn a club into something like that no matter who ran it.

You just listed names that OCCASIONALLY have appeared at Circa. I just browsed through the event archive at Circa's page, and *most of the time*, the headliners have been old names that Toronto has seen before. If I list every single name from the small rooms, many of them are likely unknown local DJs. Just like DJs who spin at small rooms of any other club in Toronto; they are usually unknown and usually local, that's why they're in the small rooms.

As far as I know, Simian or Sebastian & Kavinsky have only been to Circa once (or are going to be there for the first time), yet we have a mainstream hip hop star (Lupe Fiasco) showing up at Circa for 2nd time now in the last few months. What kind of statement do you think that sends to savvy clubgoers? Honestly, I want to hear your response, and please don't give me that tired old story of "Circa is a new club, and cannot afford to take risks".

Like I said earlier, I applaud Circa for booking acts like Sebastian, or Simian Mobile Disco, or Crystal Castles. But booking fresh talent like that needs to happen MORE often. It should be the norm, not the exception.

CRYSTAL CASTLES
SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO
Jesse Rose
Bang Gang vs Turbo Records
Wanye Mealing
GUY ORNADEL
B&A's JIMMY JAMM
DJ Heather
DJ Godfather
BoyTech (live)
Nikki Awesome
VND/LSM
JDH (fixed. nyc/philly)
VANESKA
John Acquaviva
Thomas Schumacher (East Berlin)
TOM STEPHAN Supchumbo
Myki Murder
Alex Gold (xtravaganza, space, ibiza)

Friday nights at Randomland since the start of 2008. As I stated earlier the Saturday nights are very different compared to the Friday nights at Circa. The list above looks pretty good to me with "fresh" talent that doesn't play Toronto very often. Heather, Acquiviva, and Tom Stephan may have played in Toronto once in the previous year before playing at Circa...if once. Add to the list the new DJ's coming in the next month at Circa on Friday nights I think they are doing a good job.
musicsnob_NOT
Figured I would add the next 5 weeks to the list...again all on Friday nights

Crystal Castles
Gui Boratto
Matthew Dear (Audion)
Sebastian + Kavinsky
