embrace the sketch
hell for the short time your there maybe even become one with the sketch...
i've come to prepare myself for anything at Guv...Oh look, that chick has huge fake , wait a second "her" nutsack is showing when "she" sits down...OMG look at that 60 yr old asian guy with the bottle on his head while dancing...
OHHHHHH WEELLLLLLLL...I personally go out to have a good time, I go for me and the music tied for #1 and #2 my friends who will be there...the only sketch I don't like is the dangerous sketch...and it never comes from the "skasians" everyone raves about...I agree alot of them in that age group do act ed up, but without them our scene wouldnt be as strong as it is now.
If people want to dance like a kid with severe turrets , if they want to have a conversation with them self, wear ed up clothes etc...who cares its the weekend they are harmless and they choose to do that, we don't choose that for them.
Top 40 clubs such as circa seem to bring in these crowds IMO
Guv to me is a playground, an adventure and the soundtrack during my time there couldn't be topped by any other venue.
Personally drunk white guys give me the biggest grief which is still rare at Guv but it happens sometimes. They come in swarms, looking for and by the end of the nite when they don't get any or any attention period, these guys want to be s and start , to me thats sketchier and more uncomfortable then any "skasian" or "sketchbag" giving them self a light show. |

i cant really see how you can label circa as a top 40 club, at all.
have you been to circa? |

I'll revoke that comment as they do have a variety, so it would be unfair to classify them as just a Top 40 club
but majority of the crowd certainly is
and thats my opinion |

neither can I.
guv has hip hop on fridays. does that make them a hip hop club?
fridays @ circa === punky rocky electro or minimal / techno depending on the guests.
saturdays @ circa === mainstream house in the main room and hip hop in one of the smaller rooms. |

Although it's true that Guv and Circa are completely different, I have to say that Guv takes the cake for me at least.
I've been to Circa a couple of times, and there are a few things that kinda bug me about the venue itself....
1) For us smokers.... going out for a smoke is impossible. You can't take your drink out, and you get thrown into some alley with a chain fence all around you... plus... because there's only 1 staircase, if you're on the 3rd floor it takes forever to get down to the smoking "section" (or line-up) and then you have to wait.... and wait... and by the time you finish your smoke and get back upstairs to meet your friends, they're gone and you're lost. With all the money they spent on the venue, you would think they might have put a little money towards a nice smoking area....
2) The unity factor... I like going to Guv because I run into people I know, no one cares what you look like, everyone is asking you if you're having a good time, and I've met some of my best friends at guv. With circa, if i'm not wearing some oversized potato sack-looking dress/shirt thing from some trendy store on queen st, no one is going to talk to me or care if i'm having fun...
3) MORE STAIRS!!!!! It's hard to navigate through circa... yes, guv is a bit of a maze, but once you go a few times, you've got it pretty figured out... and having to wait for 10 minutes at the top of the stairs while a security guard directs human traffic is a bit annoying.... kind of like hearing cattle.
4) There's nothing "Toronto" about it. It looks like they picked up a club from New York and put it in the middle of Toronto and said "here ya go!"
Anyway...all in all, guv is my happy place and has seen the birth of so many friendships, paternships, DJs, groups, and well, has given us so many wonderful nights, that I don't think many of us could ever turn out backs on the guv complex... Good job though to Circa for working past all of the legal battles and money issues and god knows what else and making it happen... It's a work in progress and I do wish them the best :) |
