if making circa a bit higher class keeps the skasians out im all for it. in the end the music is what will make or break my decision to go.
as for fresh talent, circa has brought in a few names that have already been to toronto before but ill use guetta as an example. david guetta was in toronto before at the century room - totally packed and a line up around the corner. i didnt end up going to circa to see him but it was nice to have the chance to see him.
bringing in the talent is a mix between bringing in what people want to see and whats new on the scene and so far circa has done a bit of both. i still havent made up my mind about that place; this summer is what will decide it for me. |

In the end what makes or breaks a club is the music and the atmosphere. I don't mind skasians because they are just "there" and they don't do anything negative. I'd much rather have skasians at a club then some art snobs, celebs, or socialites who are there just for the novelty or cool factor. |

| i dont really see the problem. the 'snob' crowd is just going to sit around in a vip booth or stand away from the dance floor anyway, versus a sea of sweaty pushy asians all swarming in a cuddle puddle. that . |

but to be honest. how is he on the wrong website tho?
yeh its called "tranceaddict" but there is a large number of people on here that im sure dont come on here looking for trance related events/djs. or dont even like trance for that fact. |
lol I didnt say it is a crime not liking trance but this is site dedicated towards tranceaddict.:p

House doesnt do anything for me at all in a club sorry. |

Now I don't know about you, but most people's definition of recycled DJs is ones that come at least once every year.
Just because they came once before, doesn't make them recycled... |
yup... not to mention they might play in a different room or a much different kind of set... djs change their tastes constantly. and so many other things like their timeslot, what event it is, etc.. it's not like you ever see the same act twice |

Did you not read what I said? I applaud Circa for booking *some* fresh talent one night out of the whole week, but they STILL DO book recycled DJs most of the time. Were you blind to my previous posts where I pointed out the NUMEROUS recycled DJs they have booked, and continue to book?
Even the list that musicsnob_NOT showed, some of the DJs on that list HAVE been to Toronto before. John Acquaviva and Guy Ornadel have been in Toronto several times before. I personally remember that Ornadel has been here at least 2 or 3 times.
I was being nice and I did not go through musicsnob's list DJ-by-DJ to show who's been in Toronto before.
By the way, before their performance at Circa, Simian Mobile Disco had already been to Toronto before and have previously performed at the Mod Club. Guess what, Sebastian and Kavinsky have ALSO been to Toronto before, when Daft Punk performed at Arrow Hall last year.
I didn't bother to mention this previously but if you really want to be an ass I can keep going and shoot down many of these "fresh" names that Circa books on Fridays for Randomland nights, a number of whom have been to Toronto before.
My list of recycled DJs that Circa books just keeps growing, so what exactly got shot down ? |
whatever...you're being completely unreasonable with your definition of "fresh talent" and what Circa could be ooing.
"one night of the week". how many ing nights do you think a club is open??? fridays and saturdays are the big nights...so that is TWO NIGHTS! As was pointed out, Fridays are more geared towards EDM, Saturdays are more mainstream, so are you expecting seven nights of "cutting edge, fresh talent" or something? Who is going to show up?
Ornadel has been here *max* 3 times in the last 5 years and I'll bet you that most people here STILL don't know who he is. Tenaglia has been here maybe 5 times in the last 10 years. Sebastian + Kavinsky opening for Daft Punk at Arrow hall (by Pearson Airport, no less) is NOT the same as being booked at a large club. Simian Mobile Disco was at Mod Club...what about before that? How many times have they been booked in Toronto in the last few years at a major venue?
The others on the list mostly are NOT "regulars" here. If they've been here once or twice before, that's hardly "recycling DJs" in the way that guys like Armin, Ferry, Sander, etc. have been booked here several times PER YEAR at THE SAME CLUB.
Circa's capacity is on par with any big club in the city. If Circa brings in people who are only previously booked at smaller, "niche" clubs, or who open for a concert, or they've been here once or twice before...that's still bringing fresh talent into the 'big club' scene on Circa's part.
IMHO, you're being ridiculously unreasonable in your expectations for a club of this size and your definition of what "fresh talent" means is far too narrow in that regard.
whatever...this is the last I'll post about it. The reality is that hardcore EDM fans, who *really* know their DJs, make up a VERY small segment of the crowd at a place like Circa and even Guv. Circa will NOT survive if they bring in obscure names known only to that group. A smaller place, like Footwork for example, could (if they choose) get away with booking whomever they want and marketing accordingly to those smaller populations and still filling their club every night.
I'm *all* for a place booking 100% fresh talent...people who have never been here before. I'd *die* to have some great minimal techno DJs like Dustin Zahn or Dirtybird booked. I'd be thrilled to see someone take a chance on up and coming talent or an international name who's never been here. But I'm not so naive to think that a club the size of Circa is going to be the place to do it, night in and night out. |

the comment wasn't directed for CIRCA as much as a general comment as to the type of party I prefer....I haven't been to CIRCA.....only because they haven't brought anyone in that I really want to hear.....when they do I will go....the only thing that gets me to any club is the music....I could care less about things like what the place looks like......I will admit that the type of people and the club vibe do affect how much I enjoy a night though. |
