reality is....the majority of circa regulars could care less who is spinning....I would go as far to say they probably don't really care what music is playing....they would be just as happy with hip hop, house, trance, eurodance, etc....pretty much anything they can get drunk and dance to. |
I just think that you shouldn't judge people without actually going.
But you obviously have some idea from what you heard or what you think so you already have a pre-conceived notions.
I don't mean to pick on you specifically but from someone that hasn't been to the club, you shouldn't assume you know what type of crowd goes.
I go there, and i like music. I also go there because it's an interesting big place.
I don't go out clubbing that often anymore and I would rather go to a nice place than slum it up at Guv.
Also a huge plus for CiRCA are the bathrooms! never waiting for a washroom like at disgusting Guv bathrooms. God, those bathrooms are gross. |

I don't go out very ofter either anymore. You prefer to go to a nice place when you go out....for me I want to go to a club that I can get down and dirty at.......we just have a different taste...like I said...I will go to CIRCA when they bring someone I want to hear....and at this point in my life....there are very few DJs that I want to go and see.....I am an old fart now and in general the crowds at every club annoy me...just some annoy me less :D |

Did you not read what I said? I applaud Circa for booking *some* fresh talent one night out of the whole week, but they STILL DO book recycled DJs most of the time. Were you blind to my previous posts where I pointed out the NUMEROUS recycled DJs they have booked, and continue to book?
Even the list that musicsnob_NOT showed, some of the DJs on that list HAVE been to Toronto before. John Acquaviva and Guy Ornadel have been in Toronto several times before. I personally remember that Ornadel has been here at least 2 or 3 times.
I was being nice and I did not go through musicsnob's list DJ-by-DJ to show who's been in Toronto before.
By the way, before their performance at Circa, Simian Mobile Disco had already been to Toronto before and have previously performed at the Mod Club. Guess what, Sebastian and Kavinsky have ALSO been to Toronto before, when Daft Punk performed at Arrow Hall last year.
I didn't bother to mention this previously but if you really want to be an ass I can keep going and shoot down many of these "fresh" names that Circa books on Fridays for Randomland nights, a number of whom have been to Toronto before.
My list of recycled DJs that Circa books just keeps growing, so what exactly got shot down ? |
Have you been to Circa or do you just read stuff and form an opinion. Instead of aplauding them for what they are trying to do on Friday nights, why don't you go and support those nights and show them that there is an audience for new, fresh talent. You probably won't because it is still too mainstream and not "underground" enought for you. Maybe you should check out the "Dear God Its Me Dance Party" when they hold it monthly on College West...that might be underground and fresh enough for you.
How do you honestly expect a club of any size to survive by bringing in a DJ 95% of the clubbing public has never even heard of? I don't know you and it really doesn't matter, but you do know that when a club books talent they usually have to book that dj for multiple gigs or book a group of DJ's that belong to that agency (from what I understand that's how Pride got stuck with Boy George a couple years ago). That's why you will see a DJ play the same club or clubs associated with each other a few times in a short period of time. A DJ that comes to Toronto once a year is not recycled and is not stale. I have been to Boa or Sonic when they brought in brand new "fresh talent" with extremely small crowds of people...we all know what happened to both of those clubs. I have also been to Hotel or some other smaller club when they bring in a DJ that is making their Toronto debut...and the parties are amazing...and they are packed for a club that holds 300 people. 300 people in Circa's smallest room is decent but still small. 300 people in Circa's main room or the Mirror Ballroom...not going to work.
Expecting a club like Circa to ONLY book DJ's that haven't played in the City is just stupid. I for one am glad Circa is trying something different on Friday nights (just like Mod Club) and will give them credit for it. One thing that I also don't undertand with people who complain about clubs bringing in DJ's like Guetta, or Axwell, etc., just because a DJ becomes successful doesn't make them bad. You may not like the music (I don't), but without booking name DJ's that will bring in a crowd the clubs won't be able to book lesser known DJs. You can't have one without the other.
Instead of bitching about Circa you should probably be bitching that the Toronto scene won't support these DJ's. The scene wants the same old DJ's, name DJ's, name locals...anything different from that the scend has a hard time supporting it.
Anyway...that's my 2 cents...probably won't change your mind as I think you'll only be happy hearing a different DJ play every night that you haven't heard of before...but wait...if you haven't heard of them before why would you go? You also have to remember that no matter how underground you are, there are others more underground than you. |

Why are you bringing up that tired old argument of "just because they're popular doesn't mean they're bad". I never said they were bad DJs, I simply said they're old names.
You obviously missed my earlier post in this thread where I said my complaints are less about Circa and more about the Toronto scene in general. I AM bitching about the Toronto scene and how most people don't support anything creative, fresh, or unique. The majority just want the same old recycled sounds and names.
I have nothing against booking big name DJs or mainstream DJs, but WHY is it SO hard for clubs to book new names? They are A LOT of big name DJs from around the world that have NOT been to Toronto before, or have only been here once. But then again this is Toronto, where people have never heard of a lot of big names.
I never said I was "underground" so stop putting words into my mouth and assuming things. There is a DIFFERENCE between booking "fresh" talent and booking "underground" DJs. For example, Alex Morph is a big international trance DJ who has never been to Toronto. He's far from underground, yet for Toronto he would be "fresh talent" since he's never been here before. |

Two enormous venues dedicated to EDM...regardless of the dozens of arguments for why one is better than the other, at least there is a choice now...remember when no one thought CIRCA would even open !!!!
really....
Why so serious ??? |
