I would love to put up some of the youtube vids of his last set here but I don't want to upset Lisa Loo...

I didn't say that all he played was minimal but he did play quite a bit...

Everything else was slow slow slow....

Jesus at one point he left the booth and had a good 5 min sit on the couch...

I did not say *just* minimal, I mentioned minimal together with electro and house. Where can I start with examples; for one thing we have Sander Van Doorn coming to Toronto now quite often. Before you say he's not minimal, I know he's not but he incorporates minimal elements into his sets and productions.

Richie Hawtin has been to Toronto a few times, and he's a combination of minimal and techno.

No, Toronto has not seen a huge number of *pure* minimal acts, but plenty of people who spin minimal techno, minimal electro, minimal house etc.

Minimal is a broad term like house, and Toronto scene has seen enough minimal in various forms and sub-genres.

1. Sander does put in some minimal elements but so do countless other djs becuase minimal is popular now. This however does not make him any close to a minimal dj, so it is a really ty argument.

2. richie hawtin plays glitchy minimal techno. Not a combination of minimal and techno because there is no such thing as just minimal. There is minimal techno, minimal house etc.

3. regarding *pure* mnml acts, wtf you mean by that? If you mean minimal techno guys on the minimal side of it then i would say that djs like matthew dear and hawtin are def. such djs.

However, i agree that there is plenty of good mnml house and techno djs coming to toronto, BUT mostly to smaller venues. So i dont see how toronto is saturated with minimal. yes there is mnml parties every week but rarely in big rooms.
Guv for example does very rarely/almost never book mnml djs for mainroom or esp. koolhauz. circa on the other hand is bringing borat's dick, dear matthew and prolly dusty kid to the mainroom very soon. So respec to circa.

i didn't read the whole thread but heres my two cents

circa. stupid, impossible and just confusing to navigate through. 10 flights of stairs not a good thing when you are wasted, sound awful, decor was pretty cool but just stupid flashy. kinda like one of those hey look this club looks cool its got to be cool.

crowd, posers, people trying to look cool like the are in the "In" crowd. lots of freaks, and just annoying people.

i'll give it this much, the staff is polite.

however i probably wouldn't step foot in that place again.

guv, better music, wayyyyy better dj's, wayy better sound. good crowed. people in it for the music. ya sure the bouncers can be a bit of s sometimes but oh well. they put up with alot of . can't blame them.

either way i'll take guvvy over circa anytime.

I like your thorough answer, and I also like that you somehow think your speculations and assumptions are somehow more accurate or better than mine.

Gatien having a controversial rep in NYC and him having lots of rich friends is not speculation though, that is fact.

lol not even new york was ever like that. you would get the odd celebrity show up at certain clubs but not in the way that say LA would. toronto would never be able to turn a club into something like that no matter who ran it.

I agree, but that was what Gatien said. Don't take my word for it, you can look up the interviews with Gatien and see for yourself.

Friday nights at Randomland since the start of 2008. As I stated earlier the Saturday nights are very different compared to the Friday nights at Circa. The list above looks pretty good to me with "fresh" talent that doesn't play Toronto very often. Heather, Acquiviva, and Tom Stephan may have played in Toronto once in the previous year before playing at Circa...if once. Add to the list the new DJ's coming in the next month at Circa on Friday nights I think they are doing a good job.

I applaud Circa for having Friday nights like that. But if Circa really is what Gatien says it is or what he wants it to be, they need to cut down on booking old names.

Yeah, what I mean by only minimal is more like very minimal techno.

what can I say?

except that your points require your speculations and assumptions are indeed correct for it to have any validity

so, you think his rich friends would automatically back him up?

friendships goes that far in business ventures, eh?

Some of my points are backed up by what Gatien himself has previously said. The points about Circa catering to celebs, socialities, and art lovers, instead of just catering to clubbers.

Also Gatien himself admitted that his friends *did* help him to open Circa. He never said exactly how they helped, but fact is they helped.
MarkT
great, he previously said that...but it won't work here and not with the kind of music you're suggesting they book.

I think it's safe to say that the socialite, celeb crowd isn't into "cutting edge" EDM, lol!

your claim of 'recycled DJs' just got shot down...and yet you respond by saying they should stop recycling DJs.

FAIL.

Did you not read what I said? I applaud Circa for booking *some* fresh talent one night out of the whole week, but they STILL DO book recycled DJs most of the time. Were you blind to my previous posts where I pointed out the NUMEROUS recycled DJs they have booked, and continue to book?

Even the list that musicsnob_NOT showed, some of the DJs on that list HAVE been to Toronto before. John Acquaviva and Guy Ornadel have been in Toronto several times before. I personally remember that Ornadel has been here at least 2 or 3 times.

I was being nice and I did not go through musicsnob's list DJ-by-DJ to show who's been in Toronto before.

By the way, before their performance at Circa, Simian Mobile Disco had already been to Toronto before and have previously performed at the Mod Club. Guess what, Sebastian and Kavinsky have ALSO been to Toronto before, when Daft Punk performed at Arrow Hall last year.

I didn't bother to mention this previously but if you really want to be an ass I can keep going and shoot down many of these "fresh" names that Circa books on Fridays for Randomland nights, a number of whom have been to Toronto before.

My list of recycled DJs that Circa books just keeps growing, so what exactly got shot down ?
Yohan
Now I don't know about you, but most people's definition of recycled DJs is ones that come at least once every year.

Just because they came once before, doesn't make them recycled...
