Agreed.

Buying the stone shouldn't be easy on the wallet but it shouldn't make you go broke for years either.

As I said - there is a balance but it should be a somewhat of a stretch to get, yes.

The idea is to get the highest quality (priority #1), biggest stone (priority #2) you can afford (with a reasonable stretch on the resources).

Non-retail resale of diamond engagement rings is around 40% to 50% of the retail value.

Spend $20k on a ring and you'd be lucky to get $10k out of it down the road if it was ever sold. Most people get around 1/3 of the retail price on resale.

The above of course is not valid for rare colored diamonds or high-carat stones (>2.5 carat, high quality). Colored and high-quality high-carat stones tend to hold their value much better - but they also tend to cost $40k++.
