Seriously, either all of you are broke big time or are greedy bastards.
I managed to by a 5000 ring to my wife to be, 7 years ago when i was still in university, doest it affect my current lifestyle? not really.
If you're asking yourself about the money you're "spending" on her then maybe you're not with the right woman, the money aspect of an engagement shouldn't even be crossing your mind. |
Absolutely agree with you. When a man is in love he doesn't care about anything but the woman he is with and $ is the last thing on his mind...respect;) |

Solution? Get a huge cubic zirconia (both of you don't tell anybody), and take her out on a $5k adventure to Vegas at the Bellagio. |
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I TOLD MY NOW HUSBAND BACK IN THE DAY TO DO.
i said, hunny, if you/we can't afford this gorgeous rock..then cubic zirconia is fine....the only thing i wanted to put money into was the setting. That way, if one day we could afford the rock..we would change it..and the setting is still the same ring. If not, who cares!
But when it all came down to it, he said he'd never do it, because he loved me, and wanted to get me something gorgeous, and beautiful. AND HE DID!

as far as im concerened he can ask for what he wants. he has to wear it. |
Wicked :D (i assume that still stands if he wanted something that costed $10,000, just like the ring he bought you??) What if it was MORE expensive than the ring he got you? Would you still be just as open about buying it for him? :)

it doesn't work this way, you're getting the woman, she's getting the engagement ring, its symbolic, don't ask. |
i duno. i see it as im getting the woman, my wife. and she's getting me, her husband.
all this said, no doubt i will still spend whatever needs to be spend on a damned wedding ring. etc etc etc... "just bc"...
but that still dont mean its right or the "best" way, or the way it should be IMO. |

at that cost it will be tacky as all hell, but hey if you want it!
the funniest part in all the arguing is the 10k out of thin air pricetag that all of us girls seem to want. missed the boat again! |

EDIT:
OK. you seem to have some very good points here with the whole size/how long factors. good points and valid. i see the parallel ur trying to draw and suppose it reasonably fair. But how can you just dismiss the cost. its a relevant factor in the equation.
and i would argue "fishing weekend" costs are still significantly less generally (unless some ppl go CRAZY with their fish weekends… or unless someone buys some dirt cheap ass diamond ring for his or her girl). and furthermore, the money on the fishing trip wasnt spent to get said trophy "big fish"
The big fish, if one happens to catch it, is not the only or main reason the fishing trip happened. Its just an awesome plus if u happen to catch one! therefore, its not like u were spending all this money in some attempt to catch this big fish that all the other men are going to respect u for!
u went away simply to have a time with the boyz. (like having time with the girls on a girls night). |
jamie i am talking about the sum of the parts here, the whole car, not the autobody pieces. regardless of the purpose of obtaining it, the blatant fact remains it is still a symbol of something bigger. don't shoot the messenger like, but you're seriously avoiding the crux of the argument. |

LOL :p
Seriously, when I am in the position that I have been dating a girl, and am at the point I feel it is the right time to propose, the engagement ring will be 1 piece to a set that ulimately becomes her wedding band. I will have it fused so that it becomes one ring. I don't see the point in having an engagement ring that is used temporarily. Total waste of money. The wedding band should be where all the money is spent. |

Ya. Not sure why I used that one (i guess bc its a large sum, w/o being bat- crazy either.
But good point. Being an "expensive ring" doesn just mean "$10,000+"
I like you. You're ok! ;) *hugs* (miss your lovely self laurs) |
