keep the $5000 and take me to Vegas for the weekend or put it towards the down payment on our eventual home

My parents are leaving me their gold bands... that's all I need around my finger and my man's.

While I don't disagree with the way most people use engagement rings, I disagree with your statement on my own view. I would buy the engagement ring with the thought to use it as part of a set to compliment the wedding band. This would then create a nice single ring once married. Although most don't think this way.

back to the c0r with ya!
But I like how you think.

Ania.. wouldn't a trip to Vegas basically cost the same as a decent engagement ring? I was just thinking about that.. hmm..

Engagement rings can be a huuuuge waste of money....especially for a couple who's saving for a new home etc....a $20G ring is totally unnecessary and guys with a g/f demanding this might want to rethink things imo...my dad's a jeweller so i'm pretty much hooked up in that sense, and even I wouldn't expect a ring that price...

dont get this twisted. im not looking to get married in the next decade even. however I'm curious if women truly care abt the size of the diamond their fiancee to be gives to them.

i'm not a materialistic person by any stretch of the imagination...but i always wanted my engagement ring to be something that was substantial..not huge..not over the top..but something that i would be proud to show off...i dunno if that makes me shallow or whatever..i don't think so..

i was engaged four months ago..and my ring is beautiful..it's a carat total weight..with two sapphires..it's not over the top and i love it...most of all tho..i love him...

It's a small price to pay for someone you plan on spending the rest of your life with - A worthy investment IMO.

She's his gf, not his fiancee or wife? He needs to lose that bitch, if she's expecting $20,000 gifts in the dating stage....

still a ridiculous custom. why does, in this day and age, the man have to buy the ring, and following in that, why does HE have to propose? This is an antiquated tradition that no longer fit into our society.

lol what? It is merely a gestural tradition. Maybe you're just looking too much into this. Who said the man has to buy the ring, or that he has to be the one to propose?

i think you're onto something here. a nice engagement ring was something i'd always wanted too, but i was willing to put the same amount of money in as my bf and then have him surprise me with the ring. i mean, it's really a symbol of the commitment you make to each other anyway, so why should he have to foot the entire bill?
