Wow - I would never agree to business travel with less than 1 business day's notice, and especially not at 5 in the morning. 1 week is customary, and if you'd known by last Tuesday you could have registered to vote by special ballot (mail-in).
Looks like you're pretty much hosed. I'd be giving the employer a piece of my mind afterward. |
Yeah, I didn't even realize until the weekend that it was going to conflict.
I'm new in my job and it's a trip I've expressed interest in going on previously, so I couldn't say no. It makes me feel slightly better that my BF is away and can't vote either and since we weren't going to vote the same way, the end result is the same.
Also, it's absolutely down to an NDP - lib race in my riding and there's no chance of the conservative candidate getting elected. I still don't get why we don't elect based on popular vote, but apparently everyone else does since it was voted down when we had that referendum on it a few years ago. |

Because popular vote does not represent local interests as well as voting in each riding does. (MPs get appointed by the party, not by the citizens) |

With a popular vote it would be even harder to get a majority government. The only parties that would benefit from a popular vote would be the small parties....like the Communist Party of Canada. |

most people can't be arsed to vote once. you'd think they'd want to vote twice every election?
civic duty is something that is not encouraged in canadian society |

I'll post my call now: I think it will be a conservative minority.
Which essentially means we just wasted a load of tax payer money calling an election for absolutely dick all. Go Canada! |

this is Harper's fault though. He called the election early, basically ting all over his own legislation. Great move Steve!
I'm not really a big fan of Jack Layton, but I will be voting NDP tomorrow. The liberal candidate in my riding was parachuted in and I don't know anything about her. The Conservative nominee is a christian conservative so that's an easy reason not to vote for her. So I'll be voting for Irene Mathyssen on the local level, not so much for the NDP federally. In the next few years when the Liberal Party gets itself together for the next election, I'll come on board again. |
