There was some interesting debate since I last bumped this thread and I just received a PM about long distance relationships, so I decided to bump this thread once again despite my self-imposed break. Apparently, this thread has served as an inspiration (or a cheap soap opera) to some people out there, so I think it's only fair I should keep you guys updated :p

Update:

The day after tomorrow I shall board the plane to Nagoya: my trip includes an exciting stopover in London for three days, and only then will I enter the Japanese airspace. We're both thrilled to know we're going to meet each other again, and we're planning a trip to the coldest and zaniest cities in the land of the rising sun. However, my cheerful optimism from the last bump has now given place to a more sober and cautious tone.

Our relationship has been on the verge of a dramatic collapse due to some friction that was already present before she left, and that has grown like a snowball ready to strike a bunch of oblivious Swiss villagers. We've been able to tackle these problems with some brutal honesty and lots of effort, but it's been difficult to ignore the elephant in the room ever since it ditched the good old peanuts for a more gassy diet. It now stinks like hell, and either we both work on a swift pachydermal defenestration as a couple in order to get Dumbo out, or we abandon the ship as individuals and pat ourselves in the back for having done our best. We had planned this trip months ago (I love the winter), but I'm now going so each one of us can answer the infamous question first posed in 1981 by the philosopher Mick Jones from The Clash: should I stay or should I go?

Though I don't mind being open about my life, which makes my posts look all the more slyleean, I'd rather keep the details as private as possible because I don't think their exposure would benefit anyone (and I'm still going through this situation, so I'd rather wait to share them with the wisdom of hindsight).

Still, I can't help but say that this has been an amazing experience so far. Even if we falter and let the relationship fail, it's been worth it. Whether or not I come back jilted to my home town is pretty irrelevant to me because I'm fighting for what I want, and I couldn't care less about the actual results.

(Actually, I could, but let's not get entangled with the semantics :D)

Some doom and gloom ahead, but there's hope :)

Do everything you can to work it out, imo.

Good luck mate :)

Well, we're still together, so you're not right yet :p

Now that you mention it, lots of things the most pessimist TA's predicted simply failed to happen: though I did meet a handful of hot girls who I know fancied me (and some that weren't hot, and loads that just didn't fancy me in any way because I'm not exactly an alpha male :p), the most intimate physical contact I had with a member of the opposite sex was a fake punch in the shoulder I gave a bird during a conversation about skin condition; I've had fit friends visit me in the comfort of my apartment, and the sexiest thing we had was passion fruit juice (and that's not a metaphor, so it's not nearly as lusty as it sounds... if anything, it smells of wee, but sweeter); and, as far as I've been told, the most provocative thing my fiancée said to a bloke was "You f****** cunt", but the guy was indeed a twat, so justice was served.

Even if we do break up, which I don't think we will, this is more of a stalemate between cynical pessimists and romantic optimists rather than a proper victory from either side.

edit: Thanks, Lews :)

My girlfriend and I "separated" last October. The constant gray skies here were keeping her depressed and she missed her family, who live back east in Atlanta. We'd always discussed moving somewhere together, but it's just not "in me" to pack up and leave somewhere so quickly. Hell, I had lived in the same house for 22 years until I moved into the city last April. So, we went our separate ways.

Slowly, it ended up turning into a weird long-distance relationship. I visited her for a week right before Christmas, and she's coming out here next weekend for Valentine's Day. We talk at least once a day for a good half-hour, and are trying to see each other once every two months or so.

I'm slowly becoming more comfortable with moving, so the tentative plan is for us to be somewhere around January or February of next year. San Francisco and Brooklyn are the two options at the top of the list.

Not to, ya know, steal Lira's thunder or anything. :p I just figured I'd throw some beans out there. *shrug*

No, I don't want this thread to be about me! Quite on the contrary, I enjoyed reading about your experience, and hope it works out in the end for you guys :)
