The Ontario Ban-wagon... where can i get off?

Ive been gone for awhile but here is an update on new bans or draconian restrictions that are being considered in our wonderful nanny province:

Toronto:

If you accidentally put a non recyclable in your recycling bin it's a $125 fine

If you don't put out a blue bin at all it's a $125 fine (Dont go on vacation folks!)

Bans on fast food containers/coffee cups(i guess we need to bring our own tupperware to mcdonalds?) and/or taxes on containers (because times arent tough enough already)

But hey, never fear. Because Miller is putting through ZERO taxes on new condo starts. At least somebody is benefitting here.

Ontario:

Broadening the pit bull ban to include new breeds (like we didnt see this coming)

Bans on cell phones and GPS devices in your car. I guess fumbling with a map is safer?

mandatory snow tires... meaning we will have to spend at least $500 on new tires and change them every spring and fall.

This is what happens when the public allows this mentality to flourish. As i always say... In Canada if you give the government an inch, they will take a mile. And then they will force you to measure it in Kilometres.

Wrong....

"Using hand-held electronic gadgets while driving would be against the law in Ontario under legislation to be introduced today.

Drivers caught emailing, texting or yapping on hand-held devices such as cellphones or BlackBerrys, or using hand-held global positioning systems would face fines and demerit points, a well-placed government source told the Star.

However, drivers using cellphones with earpieces or Bluetooth devices to carry on conversations, or using a dashboard-mounted GPS would have nothing to fear under the bill developed over the past six months by Transportation Minister Jim Bradley.

"I won't say we are staying away from GPSs ... but as long as it is mounted to the car it will be allowed," the government source added. "Portable GPS, in the hands or in BlackBerrys, are covered under the ban."

Cellphones with earpieces would be exempt despite a recent warning from the Ontario Medical Association that they are just as distracting to drivers as hand-held phones because both reduce response times by impairing cognitive function and visual concentration..."

what they dont mention is that as soon as you try to program, or look for directions on your GPS you are breaking the law. Of course its legal for the thing to sit there and tell you exactly where you are at a given moment. But doing anything else is illegal with this new law. So is changing the song on your ipod.

and re: GPS - it's safe to say that programming while driving isn't very safe, always a better bet to stop on a side to do that, before continuing the journey

And also...

SO WHAT?

There are studies that proove that electronics are DANGEROUS to have in the car. When you are in the car you should focus on DRIVING.

SO WHAT if you have to pull over to answer a call (if you dont have hands free) or to change your route on your GPS? Playing with these devices while driving is not safe for you or other drivers.

id rather take my chances while driving than get rear ended at a high speed on the side of the road looking for directions.
