So, what perspective on use do I need? |
Hypothetically if you where an employee and I had to sign off on the phone, the vast majority of that you'd have to justify 'why' you absolutely needed it as opposed to just something you would like. Why would I spend $80-90 a month supporting that 24month contract where something like a normal old phone would cost about $30 a month for a year.
What could you not do with a $10 journal, $1 biro, a $150 proper GPS unit and a normal phone (most of which have an alarm clock and calendar) as part of your occupation that would improve your productivity by +60% as an employee to justify that +60% cost increase? |

Even though mine isn't for work, I will humor you.
What can it do that your analogue ways can't? Well for one, the $150 "proper" gps is no more of a GPS than my phone. Not to mention, last I checked Google Maps is free AND automatically updated for free! No need to buy map updates every year for $100. The calendar is searchable, can alert you, you an send meeting requests via email, you can see how your time is blocked off in a visual representation as to never overbook. It can open pdfs, edit excel and word docs, you can take notes, add details to a contact for further use. Do I really have to go on about the serious business uses? |

So you spent X amount more on a phone for personal use, even through the business use of "pdfs, edit excel and word docs, you can take notes, add details to a contact for further use" probably doesn't occupy the majority of your time doing whatever it is you do in your spare time.
Maybe I'm odd, but I've really not found the use for those things in my personal life as part of a recreational activity to suddenly bust out an excel file :p
"Oh lookout she's doing up finance macro's at a party!"
Most serious business applications you mentioned get done properly on a workstation, not you tapping away at 30wpm on a little phone.
Lets face it, you would have to justify it to an employer, just saying :) |

woman, who here was needing to justify it to a business? And how is a workstation going to help when you aren't near one?
Also, of course when it comes to my use, I don't give a about excel. I have never used it. I have used word a few times, but the basic text editor is fine for what I was doing too. And who cares if it is for personal use? We all have your things we like. You like I am sure I would NEVER see the point of. To each their own. :p |

Oh but this has serious business applications Ben!
Serious Business!
Sorry, but no. It has features which might at best be considered a very stop-gap measure in a business.
You would never be sent to a business meeting to present anything on a mobile phone. Ever...
You would never be sent somewhere you didn't know without proper documentation, fuel card, tickets, maps and GPS.
You would never be asked to write up a report on a mobile phone.
You would never be sent to a site, (if it was my case a property) to photograph it with just a mobile phone.
You would not be expected to email or MMS anything back to work which couldn't be done soon as conveniently available.
In fact there isn't much I'm thinking, that if you where to be off-site deployed for any length of time where I would send an employee with anything less than a laptop.
I don't think I could justify the cost of you printing off slabs of dead tree at work on the existing laser printer for about 5% of $0.01 a go that you'd need a phone worth hundreds of dollars to maintain.
So what is essentially an entertainment device, should not be passed off as a serious business requirement.
And yes, I am an absolute terror as a manager... :D |

You really did miss the boat didn't you? You take it as if this is something to be used in place of a laptop or something else. You failed miserably though. You can continue in your own little world in this aspect, and I will continue in reality. :p |

Come on Ben, where's your hard sell on making me run out tomorrow and buying an N97 an iPhone or E71 which will increase my per annum income significantly by its mere presence and features.
Remember, in my simple Luddite little world there are three things-
Sell and Buy property
Make money in the process of the above
Managed assets
Where's my phone in all of this 5 pages that will do that with and yes you "really have to go on about the serious business uses" to sell me something and make me trade in my silly little phone (which isn't analogue by the way, the phased that out years ago) and upgrade my current 'smrt phone' to make me smart.
(I am stirring the crap out of you aren't I? Sorry)
This thread is now about shiny gadgets to maybe impress people full of things you'll probably never use seriously. :p |

No, just know that your working lifestyle may not support it, but others do. I don't use my phone for work at all, but I saw it every day for over a year how invaluable a resource it can be. |

| I make $1500 a day, every day from investments alone Ben, how rich do I have to be? ;) |

Cool, it isn't about that. I saw people who were negotiating 100m dollar business deals. They can't even begin to describe how invaluable a smartphone with access to email and everything in a single device without the need to open a laptop every time. |

| i didn't read the thread, but pretty much any HTC phone with windows mobile will do most techies/nerds well. i have an old HTC excalibur that can do most of what the brand new phones can do, save for 3G service or whatever |
