There's needy people who always need to be in a relationship to be happy. Those will probably never make friendships with the opposite sex work. However, if you're mature enough about it, I don't see why not.
And yes, most new friends I've made recently have been girls. But I think that might have more to do with the fact that, in most social science classes, there's ten chicks for every guy. |

Lucky. I go to a technology school and it's like 2 girls per class. |

Yeah I have friends in software engineering and math and it's a total sausage fest there. |
