What is Toronto culture then? The Luminato festival? :stongue: |
Too long to go into.
Toronto does have a culture and it's not a bunch of zoners on a boat. |

I have to agree
boat cruise are nowhere close to being "cultural" events |

I'm not saying specific boat cruises represent Toronto's culture. Nor am I talking about this scene specifically. However, party boats on the waterfront in the summer have been happening for well over a decade, and certainly are an aspect of Toronto's culture. This kind of thing does not happen in every city.
I also find it funny how someone who has never been on a boat cruise is so quick to pass judgement on all of them, and paint all boat cruises with the same brush. ;)

so you want a bunch of old people to agree to let you play loud music.....not going to happen....they don't and can't relate to you....they relate to the islanders. |
not just about loud music... about them coming down on certain cultural events and music events that this city could benefit immensely from in many different ways.
at the end of the day, votes count the most. If they see a larger group of people taking the opposite stance as the islanders, then perhaps they'll pull their heads out of their ass, and everyone can work towards some sort of compromise? |

Honestly guys, if those boat cruises are what defines Toronto culture I'm embarassed. And so are the boat owners from the sounds of it. (Ditto for the girl who her pants too.) |
It's not just about the boat parties. If you took the time to read the thread and the article posted, you'd knowe that the city is coming down on events at the harbor front centre, concerts on the island and harbor front centre, boats parties of all kinds, wake stock, etc... |

| i can see reason to complain at night but if its during the day (esp on a weekend), there really shouldn't be a problem. |

agreed.
This is downtown in the 4th largest metropolis in North America... guess what? there's going to be noise! It comes with the territory! |

The city's answer to compromising is simple....you can have the events, just in a different part of the city where residential housing won't hear the noise.
Votes count.....just not our votes.....now if you really want to make a difference....become a city councillor....their votes count. |

That's not what I'm responding to. I was responding to the comment that boat cruises are part of Toronto culture. Has nothing to do with noise regulations. |

I'd like to hear you expand on what you think defines Toronto culture. If you've got the time to check up on this message board everyday, then surely you can take a second and explain your defintion of Toronto and its culture.
My take on this...Do booze cruises define Toronto culture? No. But if I'm a tourist and I come to Toronto and I see a boat go by with 500 people letting loose, then stroll by a concert at the Harbourfront Center, then see a giant line up of people trying to get on a ferry to go to the island for a concert or to check out a Wakeboarding festival, I'm inclined to think that this a vibrant city I'm visiting. A city with energy and excitement that is thriving and celebrating. And that to me should be part of our city's culture. I dont think any major city should be ultra conservative. It doesn't make sense to me. Excitement and energy and a never ending list of things to do, at any time of day, is part of what makes a great city. It's a big part of why I like living here. My point is that we're a major city, not a town, not a suburb. There should be nightlife, there should be outdoor concerts during the 2.5 months that our weather grants us the ability to host them, there should be festivals on our unique island that is just a few minutes away by ferry, and if we feel like it, there should be 500 maniacs dancing on boat on Sunday afternoons for 2 months of the year! The fact is, the concerts employ people, the boats employ people, Beats Ahoy and other promoters employ people. And frankly anybody that employs people right now should be encouraged, not put out of business.
Basically Skipper, this isn't just about boat cruises, but it's the most relevant example of Toronto's obsession with banning anything exciting in this forum.
See you at Pride again? Be careful, it may be banned next. I know it employs thousands and brings in millions of people and their dollars to the city, but it might disturb the Islanders.

I wouldn't call Toronto Island part of downtown Toronto. |

The reason why I don't go on boat cruises is because of the crowd, it just strikes me as a little too hard core for me. And based on what I've heard from people who do go (and comments in this thread) - and the fact that the operators have to ban SUNSCREEN in the SUMMER just to keep G off the boat - I don't think I'm too far off base. |
