Of course. My only point about regular growth and development was to show that, technically, age IS a valid factor in one's level of maturity.
Whether or not one is able to employ those faculties is another matter, like you said. |

Well, I certainly can't argue with that! |

funny i see chicks i went to high school with on facebook who were little twigs back then and now they're huge. it's the opposite for me:p |
I downright saddened by the women from my high school class. Granted, I'm 29 in weeks, so tons of them have popped out 2 kids by now, but it's kind of sad. |

How not? You can barely say maturity stands for anything other than biological development! |

Sure, but age is a factor in biological development, therefore age is a factor in maturity. |

Aside from biological development, what is maturity then? Because that's exactly what we're arguing about here :conf: |

The ability to draw upon and effectively employ skills of higher reasoning and judgement.
Pretty sure we already said that. :p |

I must be the only one who has the opposite experience. All the people I see from high school/middle school look like they have been hitting the gym every day. |

no this was back when i was 21-23 years old (me dating him). i've grown up and look for completely different qualities now;)
i just know about his sentencing and all that because i can follow it online and i called the judge's assistant to find out the outcome of his trial.
also, we were out partying recently (my current bf and me) and we actually ran into him (ex) and we all had a drink together and he talked about his case. he's still out partying and popping pills and drinking...not a care in the world lol ughh so glad i smartened up and got out of that. |

And how does that translate into observable behaviour? Here, let me make a quick analogy:
Let's say a 16 year old can't reason as well as an 18 year old because her brain isn't fully developed. Now, instead of relationships and whatnot, let's talk about mathematics, for clarity sake. Is is justified to say that the 18 year old is necessarily a better mathematician than the 16 year old? Now, back to the whole maturity thing, can you say that the 18 year old is necessarily going to display a more mature behaviour (whatever that is) than the 16 year old? Just as the 16 year old may be more passionate and diligent student of maths, whereas the 18 year old is just a slacker (thus turning the odds against the 18 year old), the 16 year old in question may be more concerned about others, while the 18 year old could just have fully developed brain and no interest on this issue. Is it correct in any way to say that the 18 year old is more mature than the 16 year old simply because of biological differences? Unless you're talking strictly about biology, age is no sufficient condition here.
By the way, how is that difference relevant among the legal girls we're talking about? They're pretty much all over 18 anyway :conf: |
This is a great example of how you miss it. You are taking very small specific cases and projecting them to be more the rule than the exception. If you were to take 100 people of different ages, give them a situation, you could more often than not, predict who will react in a specific manner. As I said before, this is not to say EVERYONE is this way, but a majority. Now how is age not a factor? Age IS a factor. |
