I disagree that maturation of the human species is a social engineering tactic. Do you want to be around a bunch of 12 year olds that are being lunatics? I know I don't. That is part of maturing. |

You basically said that maturing is a social engineering tactic. And I wholly disagree. There is a time and a place to act or react to a situation, and as you mature you learn what that is. |

No, what he said was that we define mature by the behaviour of the majority of persons within a society... behaviour deviating from this is considered immature. I'd say Hal missed on important thing though... it's the behaviour of prudent persons governed by reason that we consider mature. |

He talked about how it was defined by that and then contradicts it by saying this:
| quote: | | Basically, maturity is merely another conformity that should be second-guessed as often as possible, if you ask me. So of course your majority is "mature" - maturity is a popular tool for getting what you want, and people are the vessels for society to get what it wants. |

Well that's certainly true. We so often forget that almost all behaviour is primarily imitative. |

Is there any behaviour that isn't imitating something someone else or something else has already done? Even if it is obscure? |

You're getting at the whole "there are no original thoughts" thing aren't you? That really doesn't apply here, as the use of the word imitate requires that the person has directly observed the subject behaviour in another individual and is now repeating it... so if you use a credit card to scratch your ankle and you've never directly observed this action before then you are not imitating it... the fact that many others have solved the problem of an itchy ankle and the inability to reach a finger in their shoe in a similar manner does not mean you are imitating them. |

| That's a good question I suppose. What sort of behaviour does an infant exhibit? What is intentional and what is instinct? what is the difference? People are socially engineered from the very beginning whether you agree with it or not. Why else would we pick between a pink rattle and a blue one? |
