Does anyone think that this is a good deal for a diamond engagement ring? (pg. 8)

Just a couple of tips...
1) don't buy a diamond ring... buy a diamond (loose stone)... that makes is a comodomy and you'll get a better stone at a better price (also you'll know what you're buying... settings are designed to cover flaws)
2) buy estate diamonds... they're second hand but it's a in' diamond so it's not like buying a second hand car. They are just as good and much less expensive.
3) get the setting custom designed/made by a goldsmith. This will allow you to have a ring made to show off the stone and fit your GF's tastes, style, etc. Besides... unless your GF is mass manufactured she deserves better then a mass manufactured ring.

For a little while, anyway.

Eventually she'll start taking it all for granted, then she'll start banging some guy on the side, and then she'll take everything in the divorce because as between two bitches the mean one always wins.

I tend to agree....I don't know any woman who gets engaged and doesn't want to show it off to their female friends and show them how much ($$$$) their BF loves them.

I can't imagine any woman running to her GFs to show them the pretty $500.00 ring their BF got them.

I think it depends on the woman. Mrs. Hazard knows I could have spent more on her ring; however, spending more would have required larger stones, which would have required a larger ring, which she agrees would not have fit her finger or lifestyle.

There is a difference between not spending the most money you could on a ring and being cheap.

If you bought Mrs. Hazard a $500.00 engagement ring I am sure she would've still said yes but do you think she would be quick to go show it off to all her friends?

i agree too. but that's just not me and there ARE going to be exceptions in this world. in fact, i can't wait to show people my crystal or whatever ing cheaper stone ring that i get and watch the look of confusion on their faces like, "...but....but....it's not a diamond. what's wrong with you?"

:stongue:

and like someone said in this thread. the money used on that ring could be a downpayment on a house or a vacation. THAT'S how i roll.

I have to applaud the New York ad firms of the early twentieth century for the way they singlehandedly created an entire cultural institution (the diamond engagement ring) around a blatant falsehood (the idea that diamonds are valuable or are in short supply). And generations later so many women are still measuring the affection of their mates by the size of the silly shiny rock on their hand.

Why is a vacation a sound investment? You go for a week then come back a ring you wear for years. When it comes to weddings I think the biggest wastes of money are on the dress, cake and flowers. You wear the dress once, eat the cake once and flowers die but a diamond is forever :D.

well it's more like i'd rather have the experience and memories of travelling with him than the rock on my hand.

i know it doesn't have to be a choice if the guy is very well off, but for us, we're building our bank accounts/future together so my priorities are very practical.

the only website where you can save money on diamonds with confidence is bluenile.com. i think they ship to the UK.
