Does anyone think that this is a good deal for a diamond engagement ring? (pg. 9)

i know it doesn't have to be a choice if the guy is very well off, but for us, we're building our bank accounts/future together so my priorities are very practical. |
i can respect that but like i said before, it should be something you can afford but given the costs of everything else in a wedding why not put something into the only thing that will last forever? you can go on vacations and build memories until you both die but a guy asks a specific girl to marry him once. there are no do overs or replacement rings. |

A ring will not last forever. It can get lost, stolen or sold. The memories of a good holiday are permanent if you ignore the possibility of brain injury or degeneration. |

| A ring is also a worthless bauble, a counterfeit cultural symbol imbued with sentimentality by clever ad men. Wear your diamond proudly and display the fact that you are precisely the unique snowflake Madison Avenue wants you to be. |

It took quite a bit of convincing, on my part, to get my fiance to get the wedding ring she liked. It wasn't that expensive, she just thought it was too much to pay for something so simple as 'a ring'.
So, Bas, I have a few questions for you.
1) How much money do you think is acceptable to spend on an engagement ring?
2) How much money do you think is acceptable to spend on a wedding ring?
3) How much money do you think your gf would find 'acceptable' on either/both of the above (considering you both have a rather serious financial commitment together now)?
4) Have you ever imagined me naked, and would that have an influence on your jewellery purchases? |
1) No more than 2k, I mean that's enough as it is. One day she's doing the dishes, or cooking, or talking about her vagina (whatever it is girls do) and BAM the ring goes flying off and she loses it. Faningtastic.
2) I was under the impression that a wedding band is cheap, how much are they? , are they expensive too
3) Her ring is already picked out and sitting at the jewelers waiting patiently for me to go pick it up. That's going to take even longer now because of the house we just got :p
4) Many times, and I would shower you in diamonds.

Just a couple of tips...
1) don't buy a diamond ring... buy a diamond (loose stone)... that makes is a comodomy and you'll get a better stone at a better price (also you'll know what you're buying... settings are designed to cover flaws)
2) buy estate diamonds... they're second hand but it's a in' diamond so it's not like buying a second hand car. They are just as good and much less expensive.
3) get the setting custom designed/made by a goldsmith. This will allow you to have a ring made to show off the stone and fit your GF's tastes, style, etc. Besides... unless your GF is mass manufactured she deserves better then a mass manufactured ring. |
By the way, I did all this. |

I spent 3 times the amount on my fiance's wedding ring than I did on her engagement ring :p
Remember the age old tip: If the word 'wedding' is associated with something, that something is automatically expensive :( |

*sigh*.... must we go over this again? First, the value is $20K, not the amount I paid. Secondly, I flipped a house and made close to $50K right before buying the ring, not needing to save up or dip into my bank account. It was a total anomale- I had really good fortune at the perfect time... otherwise I would have gone the standard route of something more on the modest side. |
