Help revive the KW scene (pg. 10)

My girlfriend goes to UW and from what I can tell there is no EDM scene with the exception of Purple Room (I'll be playing there March 6 with Marty V). The trend I noticed is that the majority of university/college students prefer the bar/pub scene and on the occasion the clubs with their music of choice top 40.

There is a small percent of students that are true edm fans thus making it hard for a club to dedicate a full night to electronic music. This is my experience while attending Sheridan College and having friends all over the province at different Colleges/University's. One offs with a big international or Toronto dj usually work because its not something people are used to in college towns. Its a shame really, that's the reason she comes back to my place on weekends to party, if there was a stronger scene I would go there for the weekend more often.

don't forget the saturday night resident, dj maus7rap. i dont know many who would openly admit what he does on his facebook bio, nor see how it would draw people on a night without a headliner booked.

i've also seen the bars come and go from tabu's location...curious to see what happens in the summer.

bio:

Entered the industry by bringing the first decent club experience to the Waterloo scene. Bought and opened my first nightclub (140) and was determined to prove that a decent iTunes mix could effectively replace any DJ and save us hundreds of dollars.

In August 2009 the cynical club owner came across a Dragon Fly flyer for a DJ that wears a giant mouse head. Caught my attention, so I figured I would book him for 140 West. August 4th was the day Deadmau5 almost came to Waterloo, but as my first booking attempt, I probably made him the most insulting offer EVER.

A staff trip to DEADMAU5 at Dragon Fly opened a door for a new appreciation for music.

Since that time maus7rap has built one of the best nightclubs and placed Waterloo on the nightclub map. NOT to mention his continued work in bringing deadmau5 to Waterloo to thank him for opening his mind, soul and ears to some great music. Joel will be shocked how far Waterloo has come in such a short time.

TABU is for real and maus7rap Saturday night residency has allowed him to spin along side, Benny Benassi, Global Deejays, Manzone & Strong, AVICII, Glenn Morrison, Cevin Fishcer, Cascada and so many more.

With the construction of maus7rap's new studio and his dabbling in production, who KNOWS what you are going to see come out of this cheesehead.

the back room at elements use to be just EDM and you would have a small crowd of regulars in there every saturday night. You would then have some people from the main room...which was top 40 music...come in and dance for a few tracks. It was usually some women that would come in there and then a group of guys follow them in and chase the women out. It got to the point where they just shut the room down because it just didn't make sense to keep a room open for like 20 people.

OH man, i miss that edm back room at elements :D

(that and the foam parties there!! :D ;))

I was in heaven... dancing to tunes (50% if lucky back then) in foam seeing more than enough chicks dancing with their bikini tops off!

HOT STUFF... loved what the foam would bring chicks to do at those parties... saw some great sights back in the good ol' days ;)

with every new post you sound more and more like an elitist douchebag!!

I think you missed my point (havn't read this thread in a bit).
I was highlighting how popular Tabu IS in KW now and that people won't be scared AWAY from EDM. It was popular to non-EDMers on an EDM night.

Elitist douchebag...wow...I'm trying to be civil cuz I'm getting feedback. The TOTA boards get f'n hostile (and ftm everyone starts to sound elitist with their POV) and I'd rather not turn this into an exercise mud slinging. If you oppose someone's view, try to take the high road and just make your point (particularly when you misinterpret a sentiment completely). This is turning into Youtube comment section.

Are you in' kidding me? If you're actually looking to create an EDM scene in K-dub then this is your market, right here... these are the people that you need to build a bass on. We're the ones that are already fans, we're the ones that you need to win over, we're the ones that will create the buzz, and we're the ones that are telling you what you need to do in order to create the scene you're looking for rather then just being another club that comes and goes in that exact same location. , there have been what 5 different clubs in that spot since Yuk Yuks moved out and not a one of them has been any different then Loose Change Louies with the exception of some decor changes. If you want to avoid being just another club to come and go in that spot then you need to listen as opposed to just dismissing us as negative. I know the money is rolling through the door pretty heavy right now... it has for every single club that has occupied that space; however, this has all to do with you or your club; rather, it is entirely because you happen to sit in the middle of the student ghetto and all the students can easily stumble home after last call. Unfortunately, come May when all the kiddies go home you're left with just us to keep you in business until September. Why do you think clubs keep failling there? It's because they're just the same as every other club in K-Dub so their only advantage is the students, which creates a very unbalanced cash-flow and eventually that's going to kill you just like it did every other club that used to occupy that space. Dismiss us as negative at your own peril; however, we've been the scene in K-W for a very very long time and we've watched many clubs come and go; mark my words - you will be no different.

guys, I think however much crap people are giving each other, from my personal experience feel that
- Tabu IS moving in the right direction
- Any time they try to post something that might be of interest there's a negative response (maybe early on I was guilty of this too)
- They are trying to cater to us and IF they actually do put up good DJs who we all know and love, there's no reason why all of us shouldn't go. It's an awesome venue and as much as it is university crowd, there are different crowds and Tabu is attracting people who like/are getting into EDM

If I gave the idea that I meant a club has to play this song, the newest track, just released on beatport, that's not how I feel about the situation. The place is awesome for having EDM events (as it has) and IF it does happen to bring in the Jaces and Ampzs and Maxwells, and yes Chungs of the area then I'm going to go.

I get the idea that some people (in this thread) want it but don't think it's possible cuz people wouldn't show up, others just don't believe they'd ever play stuff that we would like.

The "if you build it, they will come" comment was IMO correct. If they have the product you want, why wouldn't you go?
