that's the problem right there...discussion needs to happen at every level...if you stop talking about something, it becomes irrelevant and obsolete. It's almost like collectively burying our heads in the sand.

For the most part, I find his writing to be comical--in fact, I think he's adorable!

For instance, consider his response to Anas Attia:

See, now I think that is just fantastic. I particularity like that last bit about poli sci students--because judging by everything he has said in this thread, he sounds precisely like an undergraduate student enrolled in an introductory poli sci course.

There's no point getting heated over a debate that in the end won't contribute anything to the problem. Unless you really wanna get invovled, I doubt that TA is going solve any major issues in the middle east. I'm all about creating awareness, but don't just talk about it, start actually doing something to improve the propblem.

just because the govn't is spending % of my income tax on the war, doesn't mean I PERSONALLY SUPPORT THIS BULL, more like - I have no choice
or I can start witholding my tax money?
I never elected any politicians, I can't vote until 2011 at least
I DO NOT SUPPORT the war in any way, accept that I hope that all of those close to me who partake, get back home safetly. Therefore I refuse to be generalized with the "WE are at war" statements
k? k.

And I didn't vote for these ppl either...

But I am still a member of this society and therefor include myself in all that this nation is involved in...

Good or bad...

Although this thread has taken about 15 left turns from the original post (lol), something to think about.

Exactly what is duties and responsibilities of a citizen of a democractic nation?

There is a very good book I recommend reading if you're interested in this topic: The World We Want: Virtue, Vice, and the Good Citizen, by Mark Kingwell.

Next, I must address your most current comment and reveal to you how you have already knowingly or not placed words in my mouth, and other notions.

Excuse me, but I mostly quoted you directly. If you want to talk about respect, then don't use language such as destructive societal ideologies.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here. This post contained none of the passive-aggressive language that was clearly displayed in the original post. That is good. If we can keep to facts, and logic, and leave the ad hominems behind, then we have a chance at carrying on a civil conversation.

quote:
When did I ever call you or anyone else a fearmonger?

Quoting, once again:
quote:
...even a small thread such as this can drastically perpetuate notions vaguely based on the fear and the hate of others...

quote:
...your egos fly beyond reason and conclusions are made, often in fear. Fear I must add is something people will deny having strictly due to the dominance of their ego...

Ego. Fear. These were words you used, so don't accuse me of putting words in your mouth.

quote:
...I actually didn't know what sanctimonious meant so I looked it up ... I make absolutely no claims of the sorts, the only claims I have made revolve around simple human rights policies.

Sanctimonious is a common (at least in my experience) colloquial synonym for holier-than-thou, in other words, professing moral superiority, which is exactly what's implied by these references to human rights (as if to suggest that I do not believe in such frivolous things). If this "taints" the discussion, so be it; from my perspective, it was tainted from the first paragraph.

quote:
I really don't want this to be about me and you so much as it is about our arguments.

Then let's leave it that. It would have been very, very simple to open a dialogue without this baggage. For example:

Hey, Aaron/Digi, I really believe that you've gotten a number of your facts and arguments twisted, but I'd prefer to have this conversation in person because online forums are too chaotic and lead to too many misunderstandings. What do you say?

See? Simple. State your position, state your request, state your reasons. No condescending remarks, no philosophical pronouncements, no blame games. No conflation of simple meeting request with a 7-paragraph opinion statement.

quote:
As for Detroit, we did meet, you had refrained from identifying yourself apparently

If that is true, I can assure you it was not an intentional omission. It's possible I wasn't coherent at the time. It's also possible that I introduced myself as "Aaron" and not "Digi", which I always do, because that is my name, so perhaps it simply didn't click. I don't hide my identity.
