The word 'OIL' is about as all-encompassing as the Umbrella term 'MIDDLE EAST'

Forgetting for a minute the amount of OIL within certain borders, doesn't it make sense to grab control over all the wells you can regardless of amount so that when it comes to the greatest amounts (i.e. Saudi Arabia) being surrounded by US ownership would be a far easier way to coax them into selling it to the US??

P.S. I'm not a politically well informed aficionado, this is just an educated guess. I was born and brought up in the Middle East, until of course the Gulf War.

Actually, the Iraq was was/is more about maintaining a base of operations in the region then about oil. Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia all wanted US forces out of their territory, as the presence of US bases in same was creating political difficulties for the regimes. Since the US was being pressured by friendly governments in the area to leave they needed a new place to set up shop... Iraq presented a convienent opportunity to secure a base of operations. Really, if anyone wants to truly understand this war they should read some of Gwynne Dyer's books on the subject.

**edit - for all those that think G-Dubs was just trying to finish Daddy's war.... It's probable that Georgie Sr. advised G-Dubs against invading Iraq. Try to recall that Georgie Sr. was once the head of the CIA... he's an intelligence guy, as an ex-president he has access regular intelligence reports, and he would have likely had a better understanding of the situation on the ground in Iraq then G-Dubs. Georgie Sr. would have known full well that the socio-politico situation in Iraq had not changed since the first Gulf War. The reason Georgie Sr. stopped at the boarder in the first Gulf War is that he knew that Iraq would splinter if the Bathist government were removed and he knew there was no viable exit strategy if that were to happen. It's very probable that G-Dubs was acting contrary to his daddy's advice as opposed to finishing daddy's war.

Ok I'll concede to Aarons other causes being very plausible but you can't tell me that oil wasn't a HUGE part of it....

Just think about what Haliburton gained from this invasion. And who gained from their take over of the Iraqi oil industry? All of the past admins top guys and all of their friends...

- As a giant " you" to the UN? Good possibility.
- As a failed attempt to show up the EU for their perpetual ennui (i.e. playing the pathetic odds of finding real WMDs)? I can buy that.
- Because the U.S. military got an itchy trigger finger and didn't want to wait for better intelligence? Likely.
- So Bush Jr. could finally finish what his daddy started? Conceivable.

You are pathetic.

You're unable to argue against the issues that he brings up, so you call him a "Muslim hater" and tell him to shut up.

That's real big of you.

Dude, Iraq is crap for oil. I can think of all sorts of good non-Saddam, non-WMD ulterior motives for the U.S. invading Iraq but oil ain't one of them.

But oil? Pff, as if the U.S. needs a few pints of Iraqi oil. Saddam had already given most of it away in that colossal global -up, the Oil-for-Food program. America's buddies the Saudis have plenty enough to last, and don't forget that the U.S. has lots on its own land (it's just that people don't want to let them drill... better to keep the money flowing to Abdullah bin Boobitybizznatch or whatever his name is).

Why must people try to be so subtle about this? Yes, there were reasons other than Saddam (duh). Some of them good, some of them not so good. It's useless to argue now about how it all started. What matters now is how it's going to finish.

P.S. To gummybear and anyone else who replied to me, sorry but there's no way I'm wading through 60 posts of melodrama in order to read what's no doubt just another garbage heap of lame personal attacks on myself along with glowing praise for this unabashed propagandist and how his blurry video moved you to tears as if you hadn't already fully made up your minds about what's happening in a remote area of the world that you've never been to and never will.

I was born very close to the Syrian border and have family from Jordan...spent the first 8 years of my life in that area of the world and have visited several times since. If you meant, Iraq in general, no I have never been there.

As for you Spam...:) Yes, I'm the big bad meanie on here...lol..that's so funny considering how brutal Digi is to some people..I think he can stick up for himself..but thanks for coming out assface..

Actually, I was thinking of it more along the lines of a rivalry than cooperation. Son trying to prove that he's got more balls than his old man, that sort of thing.

I wanted to see how many people I could piss off in one post. I've decided that this is more fun than trying to argue rationally.

(Ironically it seemed to get digested more easily than my more rational posts. Hmm... makes you think.)

Exactly my point. Ignore the issue and just call me names. You don't just do it to Digi.

Digi at least argues the issue he's chosen to debate, and backs up his opinions with the facts and information available to him. I also rarely see him insult a person (and telling you you're wrong is NOT an insult), especially unprovoked.

I rarely see anything of use in your posts when it comes to debating the issue, just empty emotional pleas and angry, name-calling outbursts. You should grow up before you decide to debate with people who've done their research.

Reminds me of an Onion article...

quote:

WASHINGTON—Unable to rest their eyes on a colorful photograph or boldface heading that could be easily skimmed and forgotten about, Americans collectively recoiled Monday when confronted with a solid block of uninterrupted text.

Dumbfounded citizens from Maine to California gazed helplessly at the frightening chunk of print, unsure of what to do next. Without an illustration, chart, or embedded YouTube video to ease them in, millions were frozen in place, terrified by the sight of one long, unbroken string of English words.

"Why won't it just tell me what it's about?" said Boston resident Charlyne Thomson, who was bombarded with the overwhelming mass of black text late Monday afternoon. "There are no bullet points, no highlighted parts. I've looked everywhere—there's nothing here but words."

"Ow," Thomson added after reading the first and last lines in an attempt to get the gist of whatever the article, review, or possibly recipe was about.

At 3:16 p.m., a deafening sigh was heard across the country as the nation grappled with the daunting cascade of syllables, whose unfamiliar letter-upon-letter structure stretched on for an endless 500 words. Children wailed for the attention of their bewildered parents, businesses were shuttered, and local governments ground to a halt as Americans scanned the text in vain for a web link to click on.

Sources also reported a 450 percent rise in temple rubbing and under-the-breath cursing around this time.

"It demands so much of my time and concentration," said Chicago resident Dale Huza, who was confronted by the confusing mound of words early Monday afternoon. "This large block of text, it expects me to figure everything out on my own, and I hate it."

"I've never seen anything like it," said Mark Shelton, a high school teacher from St. Paul, MN who stared blankly at the page in front of him for several minutes before finally holding it up to his ear. "What does it want from us?"

As the public grows more desperate, scholars are working to randomly italicize different sections of the text, hoping the italics will land on the important parts and allow everyone to go on with their day. For now, though, millions of panicked and exhausted Americans continue to repetitively search the single column of print from top to bottom and right to left, looking for even the slightest semblance of meaning or perhaps a blurb.

Some have speculated that the never-ending flood of sentences may be a news article, medical study, urgent product recall notice, letter, user agreement, or even a binding contract of some kind. But until the news does a segment in which they take sections of the text and read them aloud in a slow, calm voice while highlighting those same words on the screen, no one can say for sure.

There are some, however, who remain unfazed by the virtual hailstorm of alternating consonants and vowels, and are determined to ignore it.

"I'm sure if it's important enough, they'll let us know some other way," Detroit local Janet Landsman said. "After all, it can't be that serious. If there were anything worthwhile buried deep in that block of impenetrable English, it would at least have an accompanying photo of a celebrity or a large humorous title containing a pop culture reference."

Added Landsman, "Whatever it is, I'm pretty sure it doesn't even have a point."
