Ricardo was horrible. Pretty much everyone who has heard him before agreed.
Apparently he's a 1 in 3 performer. 2 performances are brilliant, the other 1 sucks.
Too bad his Toronto debut was the 1 in 3 that sucks.
Such is life.
I hope the guys at Maison don't take this as a failed party. It was OK otherwise...and not a bad attempt at a first real DJ party. I hope they don't think they will always get burnt music wise when they get these slightly more obscure and cutting edge DJs in from overseas...that would suck.
They need to make other operational improvements too (wtf was up with that coat check???) |
I've seen him 3 times, and once he got off of the 80s kick I started to really enjoy his set. Think I liked it more than when I saw him at Metropolis a year or two ago. His B2B with Dandy Jack was amazing, but didn't like him as much when he was playing solo. He started to lose me when he played Les Enfants and going into 'Ricardos Hits' territory.
Sounds like (especially for the people who got in early), that the over-crowded nature inside soured things beyond the point of repair though. |

Can someone please post an impressive set from RV?
Everyone really hypes him up to be the top DJ (I think he was rated the top DJ in one of those lists within the last 2 years) but I have never heard anything from him that was exceptionally impressive. I am not being a dick and saying this stuff (impressive RV sets) doesn't exist, I would just like to hear a good set from him so I can understand the hype.
I want to like RV, but nothing I have heard to date has made me do so.
And on another note... a lot of people have the attitude that he is such an amazing DJ that he can play whatever music he likes just because he is so amazing and that those less sophisticated listers just wont get it. I do believe that you can totally mix genres, but when the DJ is the only one in a 1000 person room who is feeling the music (of whatever genre he decides to play), maybe theres something a little wrong there. Like if you decide to switch to another genre mid-set you better have a good reason for doing it and not just doing it to be like unique/ironic. You don't go to a Metallica concert and then hear them play punk rock because they are such good musicians and can just master any genre!
I almost feel like RV is the hipster choice because he is unique and different.
But to be honest I don't know much about RV in general and I would like someone to educate me! I am a big techno/minimal/deep house fan too... |

I spoke to Sneak earlier on in the night and made the mistake of thanking him for bringing Ricardo to Toronto :D He was well on the way by that point, and said the after-party would be above a kebab shop on Peter and John...but that is not even an intersection! |
I've been there! it's right next to what was formerly circa/lucid/playdium, above the middle-eastern place... they usually just do private events but there was one party put on by Locol there last spring that was aboslutely bananas. i took some friends who don't usually dig that scene and since then they haven't stopped asking me when the next event at this venue is. frankly i would love to see someone (anyone) book something (anything) there soon, it was awesome and very low-pro
lineup was mc flipside, jason hodges, loopity goofs, chris vench, g. cue and miz megs. what a night |
