All i can say is that the original sneaks birthday beats which was a surprise party for him at industry back in 98 was amazing

pure s and giggles. internationals flown in and just having fun playing records and dancing in the crowd. It was a whos who of the business and pure fun and no one taking themselves seriously. Ill never forget that night.

I bailed.

I can't imagine how ticket holders must fee.

Toronto the greedy strikes again

can't everyone (the promoters) make $20,000 in one night and be happy instead of ing everyone over to make $30,000?

Does anyone give a anymore?

You need to relax with the "big party/topic/event" is getting a lot of attention, so I will say something controversial so it will get attention on me comments. Everything that people are talking about, you find some negative spin on it so you will get people talking about you. (G20, Jersey Shore, parties, etc)

You take club photos right? Why don't you do it for free if you love the scene so much? It's because you have bills to pay. So do the clubs and promoters. Do you know how much this party cost?

Toronto the greedy? What clubs/cities/promoters throw parties for free? It's not a charity.

Anyway...

It's a shame that LOCAL DJS have better levels than established djs. Ricardo did a disgrace to that soundsystem with his levels. If you stand on the dancefloor it usually sounds crisp and clear. The distortion, ugh...

Ricardo is not my thing anyway, but I wouldn't rip on him. I knew going in that he wasn't my thing, but the people that ripped on him and didn't research his style and were expecting something else. Why were you at this party then?

I did like where the made the special DJ booth for this party. The girls were attractive and I closed out the night...

first of all -this isn't my review! never got in and just wasted my time since I dont' have a credit card to buy tickets :sadgreen:. I wasted fifteen bucks on parking and that wasn't too bad... what was bad was getting there around eleven to a somewhat short line then going all the way to the front of the line and wait more than 2 hours. Froze my toes off and by quarter to two I had enough. What I really want to know is how many people w/o tix got in? Even if I waited longer and got in seems like I made the right choice. Felt sorry for the people who bought tix and had to wait because of max capacity (staff wasn't strict).

As for Villalobos I am sure he would be better suited for a boat cruise! that or a bigger venue. Finally my suggestion to him would be to remove everyone from the booth and have him by himself.

+1

bashing gets you nowhere and you look like a jackass for doing it.

a) I've shot parites in the industry for many many years, 51% of them for free. I get paid because i deserve it.

b) my PERCEIVED negativity, is really just a way to make people think about whats going on....I am the biggest proponent of everything toronto electronic related, so much so that my efforts are always submitted to international publications/websites, because i whole heartedly believe this is the best city musically, and always will be.

c) if you take that PERCEIVED negativity as me seeking attention you are completely misreading and prejudging me, without really knowing me. sure, its easy to pick on asinine subjects such as the g20 and jersey shore, because at the end of the day, society is a joke. The constant barrage of celebrity culture, greed, and selfishness is something that irks me. ALOT. If you knew me at all (some do and will attest) then you would know that 9/10 i'm being factious and my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek, at the end of the day, my views are strictly an opinion, if you don't like them, dont read them, I can sit here with a straight face and tell you BOSSMAN, I dont know what YOUR opinions are. That may be because you don't have one, or don't have the amount of eyes on them to make a difference.

either way, i'll keep speaking my mind and being who I am, whether you are intelligent enough to cut through the sarcasm and innuendo to hear what i'm REALLY trying to say.

Or you could just look at my photos, I think they garnish enough attention, don't you?

Do you actually think the greed and selfishness and lack of respect for the people that pay good money week in and week out, by the UPPER ECHELON (the people funding and profitting off these events) is going in a good direction?

Or do you think maybe, something isnt right, and as the patrons of said events, should do something about it, so problems like last night, don't happen?

or do you wanna pay $30 to stand in line in 5 degree weather for 2 hours only to be told to off and stand there again?

me, personally, i think i'll say something, whether people get what i say or not.

The ticket situation was brutal. But is it only clubs this happens to? Ever been to a WMC party when it's oversold? Or an airport with an oversold flight? Or a train? Or you buy something online and find out 2 days later it's not in stock.

The best way to deal with mistreatment is not to attend the venue again.

The best way to get people to not go to SAID VENUE, is tell them, publicly, whats wrong with it, and why they shouldnt be going.

I think thats the jist of every one of my rants.

the people running this industry have used the music lovers long enough.

I for one, dont think its prudent to sit back and say nothing like the rest of the line-towers.

thats just who i am. take it, or leave it.

Okay so review time...

Got to Maison around 12 to find 3 MASSIVE lines, as expected. One for ticket holders, one for will call, and one for everyone else. However, nobody was being let in because somehow they were already at capacity? As stated earlier I'm assuming this party was oversold or ticket holders/will call weren't given any priority whatsoever.

Finally got in through some backdoor mission and headed to coat check. What a cluster. Just like the door, coat check was also at capacity and they were only checking in jackets as others picked theirs up to leave. Some people easily waited 45 mins just to offload their coats.

Headed to the front after having several drinks spilled on me along the way by DJ Pauly D lookalike - affliction wearing - fist pumping noobs who probably had no idea who Ricardo Villalobos even was.

Sneak was just finishing off, tossing some I'm a house gangster bandannas into the crowd......hmmmm....

The sound was extremely underwhelming for me. I've heard Funktion One systems numerous times before and they're incredible. As rabbitjoker said, this was probably an issue with setup or Sneak/Ricardo pushing the mixer too much...

Ricardo started off alright, nothing special and certainly not his typical European sound, but knowing what he's capable of I had high hopes. Unfortunately I couldn't really get into it because of the pushy, over the top and in your face crowd. Some douche literally barged right into a girl we were with and almost knocked her flat on her ass. We asked him quite politely to respect other peoples space and his response was to charge her and try to "knock her out".....idiot.

Headed to the patio for a break and met some really nice girls who came up from Detroit. They couldn't believe the nightmare that Maison and the crowd was, rightfully so. Just as we're having this conversation, a bunch of Mike The Situations' appear and yell "BEST PARTY EVER BROSKI!". Noted.

Head back downstairs, this time to the booths along the side in order to avoid the horror-show of a dance-floor. At this point Ricardo's pretty sloppy, but it doesn't seem to matter in the slightest, the crowd is eating everything up. He literally could have busted out a 40 minute set of random retro and.......oh wait, he did.

No B2B as Sneak's partying caught up with him. Finally decided to leave around 4:15 after waiting maybe 30 mins to get our coats.

I've been to a couple editions of Sneaks Birthday Beats over the years, and as already mentioned, the vibe/crowd/music has always been top notch. Unfortunately last night just missed.

Having said that, I respect everyone who came together to finally bring Ricardo Villalobos back to Toronto, certainly not an easy feat.

If last night was anyones first time seeing him and left disappointed, I would strongly suggest checking him out again if given the opportunity, at a festival or day party overseas. When he's on, it really is magic and a completely different sound then last night.

Overall, clearly last night failed for a lot of reasons that don't need to be brought up again, but hopefully this can be looked upon as a learning experience that can help make future big bookings better.

Think I've been to almost every one since they started in Toronto. I'm not going to say much but it was great to see my old industry crew in attendance and to party in one of the spaces I basically grew up in (Factory, OZ, X-it, Digital).

As for the party itself, it was one of the better parties I've been to, it's difficult to get me out of the house these days but last night the crowd was something I'd gladly deal with again. Not sure I'm a fan of $8.00 stella's but for being understaffed the tenders did a great job. Sound was excellent, someone during the night commented how they thought it sucked and I had to remind them that we were in the middle of the dancefloor having a normal conversation and not shouting at eachother. This will always be one of the easiest ways to determine quality sound along with the fact my ears are not ringing. Funktion-1 makes really nice sound product

Caught Fries & Bridges, Sneak but sadly missed Ricardo, everything I heard was fresh with a blend of classics thrown in for good measure.

At the close of 2010 this could be up for party of the year
