thanx Wai, I'll check out one of those Emixes. Idk if I'd listen to them on my ipod but I'd consider checking out one of their shows. def wouldn't mind having a blu ray of their MSG set, that stream was nice.

I've heard of them of course but I've always branched them under the deadmau5, guetta, avicii, benassi umbrella. the house I'm into is mostly the style of michael woods or daniel portman, or the dark style of cid inc. something about shm is a bit too commercial, poppy for me but a taste wouldn't hurt in between genres.

I'd also recommend an essential mix for you--if you haven't done so yet, you should definitely grab Michael Woods E-Mix from a week or 2 ago. that's the kind of set I would want to be hearing on NYE. I'd actually be playing a lot of those trax on NYE :)

As soon as you said "Michael Woods" I was going to recommend his EM, but as I read further I see that you suggested it yourself. Full of energy. I think Wai would probably like this one, based on her tastes. :)

that this current trend of edm pop will only be around 1 or 2 more years to come
my mistake

madonna's stuff she can get away with, she been around for years and has always been differnt and had some edm influence in some of her music
but 2009 was imo was def the start of the crossover with shm,guetta,deadmau5,tiesto etc etc

just talk to some of your non TA friends.. maybe 30% of my other friends would even know who SHM is.. although suppose most by now know deadmau5 and guetta.. whether guetta is edm is a different discussion :)

shm wont ruin anything that wasnt going to get ruined anyway.. things change, evolve (or de-evolve). some of all those new shm fans will get into other edm genres, some will not and miss out.. is life.

Ah ok, no doubt.

I just really find the whole EDM movement very ironic. When I was in college in RI I would have to defend GU19 and Sash and Digweed's Communicate as even being music! "What, no words? It all sounds the same! It's made on a computer!" Now kids in Pennsylvania are going nutts to Avicii?

It's crazy that the artists/clubs/music that laid the foundation of house and techno are getting swept under the rug as if they never existed and no I dont think people will look back that are just getting into it now any more than a Britney Spears fan likes Janis Joplin.

The 'rave' culture in America is defiantly fulled by a rebellious nature youth always have. EDM being cutting edge, technologically driven and not what they parents listened to has really hit the nail on the head for many things that kids are looking for.

Yes Ravan, we know "is life" but it still interesting to talk about. ;)

I think its awesome that kids in PA (where I grew up, btw) are going nuts to Avicii. There's no shame in making pop music. It's fun, catchy, and easy to enjoy. It's music that appeals to lots of people. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I'm really happy to see EDM pop music being made and played. Hell, its a million times better than other pop music like rock or hip hop!

Everyone has a different emotional relationship with music. Some of it goes deep, some of it doesn't. I'm just happy that everyone can enjoy EDM at some level. For the rest of us, there's plenty of music being made that cuts as deep as we like it to... and its not going away.

I think we need some perspective here. During what we all thought was the "underground" era, with EDM being only a part of the lives of those who sought it out, these songs were on every big radio station (you know, when regular radio still mattered).

And regarding selling out, Tiesto and the Crystal Method were background music of video games over a decade ago. There's always going to be the commercially tangible version of the music we love. That's not a bad thing. If the above didn't kill EDM, then there's no way that Swedish House Mafia will.

I think it's great that some artists who are/were actually reputable and have a history behind them are turning into the gateway drug of sorts. Think about it. Kid goes and see new Tiesto, and thinks he's the man. Checks his back catalog. Finds "old school" Tiesto, and falls in love with the same music we used to love. That person may never have given old school Tiesto a chance, but because it's a name he already knew, he gave it a shot.

Optimism, my friends :)

am i the only one here who really doesn't care about any of this stuff and just goes to EDM shows to have a good time?
