You want some food for thought? How about the fact that no serious Christian took Genesis literally until the 19th century? There are two god damned Creation stories back to back. It's not supposed to be taken literally.

I keep seeing this posted up on forums but my understanding is that it's a complete myth.

The lutheran church was founded in the 15th century for the very reason to get Christian to STOP taking the bible literally and consider is allegorical, for which they were ex-comminicated.

The Augustine church back in the 4th century pleaded with followers to not take all of the book literally (indicating it was) but even they agreed that certain parts such as the creation of woman from adam's rib, or the virgin mary were direct recordings of history, not allegorical fables.

It was the fact that the bible WAS taken literally that these kind of movements came about.

I may well be wrong but from what I have read it's seems the confusion with this "myth" stems from the fact that in the 18th century, there was a gathering movement towards reforming the Christian church as some felt it was losing so much power/being diluted, so certain factions took a hard line and literal approach to the bible. This was also at a time when religion was becoming diametrically opposed to science and reason, the final demise of the feudal system was happening in most European countries and monarchies (or rulers ordained by god)were falling. So people kept writing "it first became an issue in the 18th century" but what they mean is the struggle of biblical literalism, not that it was first time the bible was taken literally.

I think the main source of this confusion is a poorly written wiki article.

He wasn't talking about the whole Bible though, just Genesis.

Your understanding is incorrect. Origin of Alexandria, Augustine of Hippo, and Thomas Aquinas (three of the most prominent Christian thinkers of all time) all wrote about how Genesis was metaphorical and should not be taken literally.

Augustine, when referring to Genesis and the debate over how to interpret it, wrote:

quote:
...in matters that are obscure and far beyond our vision ... we should not rush in headlong and so firmly take our stand on one side that, if further progress in the search of truth justly undermines this position, we too fall with it. That would be to battle not for the teaching of Holy Scripture but for our own, wishing its teaching to conform to ours, whereas we ought to wish ours to conform to that of Sacred Scripture.

St. Augustine, The Literal Meaning of Genesis, translated and annotated by John Hammond Taylor, S.J., Volume I (New York: Newman Press, 1982), page 41.

If he took Iboga and was shown the date of his death and it was accurate, that seems to kind of go against your free will thesis, doesn't it?

No. And the point I was trying to make had nothing to do with free will, but rather with the likelihood that there exists something beyond mere "scientific method" and the theory of evolution, that people seem to hold so dear.
