| Oh, and may I point out that all the men in power in democracies are usually people who have an education grounded in social science? How often do you see a chemical engineer become the prime Minister of Canada? Probably never...it's always lawyers, scholars and businessmen who run countries. |

ever heard the phrase "history repeats itself."? Well, history does repeat itself and maybe if you actually knew anything about the subject, you'd see that history is being repeated all over the world right now and I shouldn't have to tell you where. If you don't know your past, how do you know yourself? See, whenever a political or historical debate comes up in any discussion, it's always the science nerds that are silent. Why? Because they don't know anything other than technical that doesn't matter outside of their area of study or profession/career. |
I have an undergrad degree and have almost completed a masters (in a social science) and what you just wrote is way out of line. it's not something that should even be argued about. Some ppl in sciences know a lot about current events....and even if they don't they are doing extremely useful work (perhaps they will find a cure for the cancer you may develop from your smoking)while you are predicting conflcit in uzbekistan. |

Hence why so many countries are a bloody mess. You'd think that if we knew our past, then we wouldn't have lawyers, scholars and businessmen in positions of power anymore. |

Don't even go there ladies. It's SO not worth it. |
Why shouldn't you go there? Maybe because in any social/political or historical debate, I'll use you to wipe my ass with perhaps? My friend is an excellent example of a smart science type that knows all about what's going in this world. By his own admission, the only intelligent things that he can talk about are coding and software engineering...and every time a debate comes up, he can't say anything becaue he knows all. A lot of science types are like that, I find. |

so the be all and end all is being in politics?
engineers have extremely high rates of becoming CEO's whish is nothing to scoff at, and in a time of a global economy that is often a more powerful position than being in politics (this coming from a poli sci major) |

Well, see...countries with a past to be proud of (like Canada, Britain, European nations, and to some extent the USA)....well our countries aren't a bloody mess because the scholars and politicians have looked at our past, recognised what was wrong and made sure it never happened (or may happen) again. |

I wouldn't go there because you are not a good listener.
And is that the kind of attitude that you use when you normally interact with people in the "real world"? |

no, it's not the be all and end all...but political positions are far more important than being an executive at Nortel (like my uncle). Politicians directly influence our lives and shape our future and to do that effectively, they should know their history well. What I'm doing here is refuting Stereo Princess's foolish comment that all historian's do is analyse the past and have no use in present day. What an idiotic thing to say. |

There are A LOT of things in any of those country's pasts that I wouldn't be proud of. Including ours. |
