Well, history does repeat itself and maybe if you actually knew anything about the subject, you'd see that history is being repeated all over the world right now and I shouldn't have to tell you where. If you don't know your past, how do you know yourself? See, whenever a political or historical debate comes up in any discussion, it's always the science nerds that are silent. Why? Because they don't know anything other than technical that doesn't matter outside of their area of study or profession/career.

You didn't just call me a science nerd, did you? Techincal that doesn't matter beyond their area of study? Let me tell you, you wouldn't ing exist right now if there were no "science nerds". There would be no food to eat, no water to drink, no air to breathe and no ing sunlight to enjoy. Take you head out of your ass buddy and recognize that you are not studying history because you think its necessary, you are studying it to get into Law school and be an idiot lawyer and make money. Do you honestly believe that you can change the world by studying the past? I can change the quality of life that people lead and I actually care about it. What the do you care about? An 85% on your essay. Congrats, you win the super prize.

So what if history repeats itself? The whole point is to not repeat it. If the inevitible repeating of history is going to happen anyways then I can just catch it as it occurs. Why study it over and over again?

no, it's not the be all and end all...but political positions are far more important than being an executive at Nortel (like my uncle). Politicians directly influence our lives and shape our future and to do that effectively, they should know their history well. What I'm doing here is refuting Stereo Princess's foolish comment that all historian's do is analyse the past and have no use in present day. What an idiotic thing to say.

you can't argue w/ the fact that there are CEO's that have more impact on the world than politicians (this is not what i consider a good thing, but it is a truth nonetheless)

no, I just have an unflinching desire to support my opinions. I know there are people who agree with me, but the three or four of you are hopeless.

Well, see...countries with a past to be proud of (like Canada, Britain, European nations, and to some extent the USA)....well our countries aren't a bloody mess because the scholars and politicians have looked at our past, recognised what was wrong and made sure it never happened (or may happen) again.

you call yourself a historian?

hahahahahahaha

please refer to your academic library and take out the book "none is too many" by abella and troper.

Unflinching = not listening, in your VERY particular case.

And I beg to differ about the "hopeless" bit. You don't even know any of us, and haven't even tried to even listen to us, so I think you're more on your way to becoming hopeless than we are. Very nice. Very classy smitty.

Okay, WWI and WWII are the first big ones that come to mind. Our past and present treatment of First Nations people. Our past and present treatment of our natural resources. George W. Bush. Vietnam War. Gulf War.

And these are a few of my least favorite things...

My respect for you is all but gone.....your argument is pointless. Ok sure, let's not teach the Crusades, even though we have a Crusade on our hands right now. Let's not teach WW2 and the Holocaust, because "damn, it's just going to happen again anyway! we'll deal with it when it comes around again." What a ing retarded statement.

Being an historian, I care about a lot of things. I care about our society, our laws, our traditions, our culture, which we can all learn about through the study of our past and use that past to help improve the future. How do you think we achieved democracy in the first place...by studying microbes in a lab? I'm not arguing the benefits of science.....we need it of course...but we use it as a tool, whereas history and politics are used on a higher level than that.

Okay, well, I'm out of here, you complete and utter fool. You are so not worth this discussion anymore. Hope you learn to open your eyes one day. One can only hope...
