I'm glad to see some cogent defenses of atheism here, rather than dogmatism. I am myself an atheist, for many of the same lines of reasoning posted, and here in the United States that is rather rare.
The religiousness of this country is suffocating; for example, a nationwide 2000 Gallup poll found that 48% of Americans would oppose (vote against) a candidate for president were that candidate an atheist, by far the most persecuted of the attributes polled (behind homosexuality; a gay candidate would be opposed by 37%). In most European countries it seems to me that religious views and sexual orientation are not even a consideration when it comes to political office.

So as if this thread weren't aggrevating enough
with the endless and pointless arguments
(No one is going to change anyone's mind here-
you do all realize that? It was like giving definitions
of Christianity to the girl that swore it wasn't a religion)....
We now have this guy who thinks it's humorous to have everyone's
width be all ed up because he decides to write in size 10.
Making your words that large of a size does not mean
that anyone is going to listen to you,
in case you didn't know.
All it's going to do is annoy everyone
and guarantee their ignorance of your post. |

I've always thought that living in the US as an athiest must be hell on earth, and that just confirms my views.
I'm extremely thankful that I live here, where people just don't seem to give a damn about religion. I wouldn't be surprised if there are atheists in parliment, it just isn't brought up like it seems to be in the US.
France wouldn't be too bad either, they're practically total opposites of the US, religious people get the same kind of stuff that athiests recieve in the US. |

that's true, if Chirac were to say "God bless France", there would be an instant revolution..
i haven't read the whole thread, but i can't see why you would believe in something you don't know anything about. if there is no plausible definition of the concept "God", a definition that works for anybody, why would you believe in that concept?
if you hear the word "love", everybody on earth has a similar image of that phenomenon, because one way or an other, we've all experienced it.
when you ask a million people what is God, they will all have a different image, because they don't know what it really is. they either form an image of their own or they go by the old-man-with-the-beard story Floorfiller referred to.
something exists when it is perceived and has been defined according to its visible caracteristics. not necessarily tangible (such as love), but visible. |
