you want to embrace the same values and principles you were raised with as you grow old with someone, sorta like a comfort blanket.

so true...the older I get the more i realize this

a friend up here is dating a jewish russian girl.

and I know that her parents really wish and are semi-upset that her bf isn't Jewish. Like this quite bothers them and they are vocal about their non-approval of the situation. *WEAK!*

i simply dont get it. its brutal IMO.

ITS YOUR KID'S LIFE! Let them be happy with who they are happy with. Its not about YOU (the parents)... thats the truly sad part in my mind.

Well. . . at least they (the parents) arent expecting that their daughter also must date someone of the same race (Russian) as well.

EDIT:

not that being jewish would qualify for being "multicultural" would it? (tho the russian part would)

does multicultural entail relgion? ie. if i, an atheist, dated a christian, i dont think anyone would consider it a 'multicultural' relationship.

. . . all that said tho, whether or not being "jewish" only signifies one's religion, but not also one's race or nationality is a matter up for debate. . . apparently the jewish population itself is highly polarized and split on the matter. many consider being jewish as encompassing their race or nationality.

whether they are correct or not, most parents want the best for their kids

I face similar situation with the scenario you've described and my parents are like, I'd have an easier time with a girl from my own background.

I can see where they are coming from, but considering divorce rates are sky high nowadays, there isn't much to judge exactly what makes for a successful relationships

My Aunt is Crazy. She's Korean and Crazy religious. Like she's goes to 3rd world countries (including North Korea :nervous:) and kind of does preaching work and stuff like that lol

Anyways, she refuses to accept any girl that dates her sons if they aren't Korean and very religious.

One of my cousins actually did find a nice religious Korean girl...and even then she wasn't good enough.

If anything, its going to hurt her relationship with her kids. It's like someone can really control who they fall in love with, and in the end, she's going to be the one left in the dark.

I don't understand people sometimes....

I think my parents finally understood few years ago that in the end, it's my life, and my mistakes to make...
Well, they have ideas of what they'd like to see in my life but eh.

I'm old enough to accept the consequences of my decisions and my parents did their best to raise me till my adulthood, and best they can do is to give me advice and support me

I just can't wait until they hear that my sister is dating an English dude :haha:

I totally understand you, bro. My Mom is no extremist or anything, but she is a devout, practicing Muslim. I'm way more moderate than her, but because I'm kinda taking care of her now (only son) I really hafta look after her interests.

With my ex, who was shunned by the majority of my group of aunts and uncles, my Mom actually ended up supporting the relationship and gave me permission to get engaged. Without that permission, I never would have pursued it. However, I had to work bloody hard to make that happen and make my Mom see that my ex was a good girl. Other TAs have met her and they loved her, too :(.

But at the end of the day, there were certain important differences that were not compromised or reconciled and that's why I LEARNED on my OWN what's right for me (because what's right for me = what's right for my family; not everyone thinks that way). That responds to your concern, Jems, because I do have different values than your friend, perhaps, because he wants to be happy while I want to make my family happy (as that would ultimately make me happy).

Anyway, /rant gotta finish this stupid deal at work.
