If I came across as making you out to be a weido, I apologize and that wasn't my intention at all, I just simply feel like some people take the music (trance) so analytical and think just a little bit too deep about things, that's all... and as much as I don't want to say it, I almost feel like there is a "brainwashing" effect going on since everyone seems to focus entirely on this so-called spirituality and nothing else.

Honestly, I just have to chuckle a bit when I read posts regarding this mindset and how serious and almost how shallow some of the sentences come across to me, and believe me, they do come across as very hoaky and forced at times which makes me question those people to an extent. That's basically what I'm trying to say, and by no means am I putting down the natural emotion and feelings that can be felt by music, because hey, I feel the same damn way about house/downtempo/acid jazz. I just don't feel the absolute need to be all floaty about it and say, "Oh wow, that house music, you know it just makes me feel all happy and warm inside, so much so that it is the best music in the entire world and I'm just so in love with the beauty and the hypnotic layers." That just sounds very predisposed to me, and if there is one thing I can't stand, it's fakeness and unfortunately, that is how I see many of these posts (and the trance scene as well). Maybe it's just because I'm more of an easy-going and casual type of guy who doesn't feel the need to get totally philisophical about things such as music... and music has been my number one interest since 4th grade, so I don't know.

I also feel like trance, and specifically trance, is very one-sided and sterile that it is no longer about evoking different types of moods or activities such as just having a good time or whatever, but rather about over-trying to give the listener a false, must-have heavenly experience. Trance, IMO tries too hard and I feel if the genre, the listeners, and the dj's/producers would lighten up somewhat and stop overthinking things, my assertions on this would probably change.

I think I'm done with this now.

fakeness in the trance scene, that is something I am all too familiar with. The genreal fakeness and hypocrisy in this music is really dissapointing.

But honestly I go to other styles and find the same stuff there too. This sonds alot like people saying "my doesn't stink" whenever they bash trance for having these issues, and then totally gloss over the fact that it also exists in many other forms of music. Personally I think that this is a people issue, not a music issue, and there is no sense binding the actions of fans to the properties of the music. I think alot of the commentary regarding this music really needs to make that distinction, that the people surrounding the music are the main issue.

I think I'm done too, but just to let you know, i'm NOT fake, so please don't think i'm one of these fake people. And another thing..i'm not a part of the club scene so I don't base my feelings of this music on it, but rather my own personal feelings about things. I'm passionate about it, and i've listened to it for so long, this is how i've come to know it and love it. Yeah I might be over-analyzing, but that doens't mean you have to do that. Analyzing music is a part of appreciate for it, as many people analyze classical music. Some people are more analytical and observant, imaginative and emotional than others, and I am one of them, NOT just with music. This is the way i've been, and NOTHING will stop me from being passionate, it's who I am, and I can't help it, but it has absolutely NOTHING to do with me being fake or a newbie, quite the contrary. I don't just listen to it, I feel this music, it is the soundtrack to my life, but it is NOT just trance that does this for me. I listen to quite a lot of downtempo lately too, and that exemplifies a lot of emotions and images in me as well.

I started listening to Enigma, Delerium, Enya, and Moby before I got into this stuff, so the feelings from that stuff were brought over into this music, and with it I found my "niche". If you talked to me outside of this forum you would know more about me and understand a little bit better where I am coming from, why I think the way I do, but again you don't know me, so you (and I) are only basing this off of what we say on this forum. It is alot more complex than you think, and I've never said I'm a really simple person. I have a real complex mind, but most of the time, i'm actually quite chill and have a sense of humor and like to be silly and laugh and do all that kind of stuff, i'm not as serious and deep and whatever as I may come across sometimes on here or in some other instances where I am around topics, ideas, music or just things I am passionante about. I'm pretty reserved at first, but once you get to know me, you'll notice I have many different sides to me. I'm not one way all the time. And I'm actually quite friendly...

Im just worried about the long hair tbh ... :nervous:

seriously though ... tbh i lean to more proggier sounding tunage so i prob not at liberty to comment on his own work but i do agree that so much stuff being churned about is soundign very samey ...

though that not the only genre ... anything harder than trance is suffering the same imo ...

I do rate Gaz a DJ though so at least he one of the producors that CAN mix

So how was my set that night? I scared the people off the dfloor half way into my set? You heard only bad things afterwards? How was my mixing? How was Dallas Superstars' set? He didn't have (visible) notes so my man Hessu's set must've been lightyears better?

I feel part of being a DJ (yes I do spin) is the spontaneous action of playing something the crowd might not expect or changing the direction of a set. I also don't think being prepared involves having a pre planned set. Being prepared in my mind is having the right tunes, knowing those tunes and to have a level head, not having all your tracks laid out well in advance. Where is the fun in that I ask you?

First off, the people don't know (and NO, I'm not underestimating the crowd, but they just don't unless they lurk behind my back looking over my shoulder instead of listening and dancing) what I'm "going to" or "supposed to" play so me having notes or pre-planned parts in my set makes no negative difference to their listening pleasure, just adds to my comfort and even confidence for that matter. Knowing keys + accurate in/out spots allows me to mix "tighter" so going from track to track doesn't take too long (vs. mixing "long" on the intro/outro beat parts to be on the safe side) and I can mix in/out at "odd" points because I know when and where ("knowing those tunes"). I'm sorry if you see it so that I just "make a list and play it thru like it was a cd" and "set a low standard for myself" because I think that I can give a more musical, more consistent and better-flowing set to the listener when I think of the mixes beforehand. I feel that djs who don't plan their sets like that at all and just mix in/out in the end/beginning of tracks (because they need to to prevent clashing notes or sounds) are setting low standards to themselves (or are just learning djing and haven't gotten that far yet).

Btw, how many sets of mine you've heard/seen? (since you seem to know what I do every set I play)
When I'm on four-week tour in North America for eg. I sure do have a list of, say, 50 "active" tracks ("the right tunes") for that tour and another 50-100 usable tracks (recent/classic/just good) + the odd 1000 others that I have on my harddrive. I do play again combinations that I like and I've found to work well together but I've pretty much never played the same set twice. Like I said, I can "change the direction" of my set at any time if I feel the need to. As a dj I want to play great music and keep even the not-so-enthusiastic/educated clubbers interested and on the dancefloor as well as educate them a little and play new music or music that other djs don't spin too much.

PS. Gaz is probably somewhere laughing his aR$e 0ff because of these 10+ pages of discussion started by just him saying a couple of things out loud. Forums rock and suck so much at the same time. ;)

i think, with any genre, there is always going to be "cheese" everyone loves to hear the same damn thing with different musical construction, arrangement & notes and what not.

just look at the genres like rock and rap. most of the time its the same thing, weak grooves that could be made in my basement, same styles of singing, same everything.

hell.

gareth emery vs nicholas bennison - interlok (gaz's dubbed out mix)

Nothing was like that.
Every track had power, energy.
Every set was avarage to simply classic.
There were not much remakes as there are now.
Every breakdown had a reason for being.

I wasn't into trance too much back then, but the ratio was probably like 70% back then from what I've heard on mix CD's, compliations, and "classics" charts from 1997-1999.

But I will give that era the fact that most tracks had decent breakdowns. From about 2004 till now, I just have to wonder why most producers even bother with putting any rhythm in the tracks at all! Just make the track one long breakdown! LOL (there was a track from 2003 or 2004 that comes to mind, which had a 2 minute intro, a 3 minute breakdown, and a 2 minute outro... which means about all you really ever heard from the track was breakdown once you were done mixing!!!)

Most big DJs do this without notes. Its called knowing your tracks.

, then I guess I have to admit to myself that I'll never be a big dj because I can't memorize 100+ new tracks' good spots every month and I have to use notes. Oh well. I hope I still get gigs.;)

Hehe. I'd wager that's why so many top jocks end up playing the same bloody tunes over and over, whether they're good or not.
