As a former Soviet citizen, this was some A+ grade ass kicking.
Good to see them back in good form. |

To be fair, looting has served as a military reward system since time immemorial. |

hah what else do you expect from russians, they are pigs, they have no regard for other human beings other than their own.
i've heard they are actually sending in ossetians to torture and kill georgians that are still around city of gori so that they can say they are not the ones who are killing and that they are just "peacekeepers"
they have set up checkpoints throughout highways and taking ransom form people that are trying to get home to tbilisi |

They sent Chechnya's troops, who had been known for cruelty when taking care of chechnya's separatists, to do "cleanings" of s.ossetia's villages where there are georgian people left. |

Apparently they do, hence why they invaded to protect Ossetians.

Well duh. No one wants to get caught torturing people. Just look at Abu Ghraib.

My government (Illinois) does this too, they call it a toll. And trust me, it feels even worse than extortion. And the roads still look like a dirt path in Georgia that's been getting ass pounded by Russian artillery for a whole weekend. |

haha. doesn't make it right though does it? ;)
russia had a big chance here to show the rest of the world that its rhetoric re iraq et al. mattered. it might have been the shrewd move from a military standpoint, but not a political one.

or avenging soldiers as an excuse to use force that they've wanted to? fact is, how these things "really" began is sometimes so hard to define. anyone (and i am not referring to you) that holds some kind of 90/10 opinion on the politics of these situations isnt credible in my opinion. |

While this may be true, the fact still remains that if Hitler had at the very minimum doubled the number of troops that originally marched into Russia, they would have been on their knees very quickly.
|
Hitler could have won with the troops he had if he had used them properly. His arrogance caused him to send his troops into the Russia with no winter provisions because he assumed Russia would be crushed before then. He could have got away with this mistake had he listened to his generals and capitalized on the advantage his surprise attack gave him by advancing directly to Moscow. Hitler would not listen of course and wasted two valuable months trying to take Leningrad with the troops he should have sent to Moscow. By the time he gave up on overrunning Leningrad it was already October and heavy rains came to disrupt his supply lines and make it difficult to advance. Just about the time the Germans could finally advance again the first blizzards of winter hit to freeze the unprepared German troops. All while the Russians were using their rail network to resupply Moscow with fresh troops prepared for winter fighting.
Had Hitler moved on Moscow in August 1941 instead of going to Leningrad he would have crushed the majority of the Soviet army there and overrun the city before the bad weather set in. This would have changed the face of the war completely, there is no way the D-day invasion could have taken place when it did if there was no war on the Eastern front to occupy some of Hitler's best troops. But like I said, fortunately for the world that fool was both insane and a horrible military commander. |
